The Phillies will hit the road for Denver after a commanding series sweep against the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend.
The sweep was due to many factors, but starting pitching had to be the most impacting for the Phillies, with starters Ranger Suarez, Zack Wheeler, and Mick Abel, who made his Major League debut, all receiving a quality start and a win.
The Last Time They Met
The last time the Phillies and the Rockies faced off was the home opening series at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. This series ended up in a sweep for Philadelphia, as the Phillies’ pitching limited the Rockies to only three runs during the three games.
Though being silenced for the first two-thirds of game one, the Phillies’ bats caught fire, and the rest was history. Hitters at the plate continued to pad on run support for the pitching staff, which became a huge cause for the sweep.
Historical Start for the Rockies… In a Bad Way
The Rockies left the series against Philadelphia with a record of 1-5. It had seemed the Rockies were getting close to their rock bottom, but the Rockies have won only seven games since then, with a record of 8-38. It is safe to say that the Rockies are in a little bit of trouble.
Through the first twenty-five games of the 2025 season, the Rockies were outscored by 60 runs, with the next closest being the White Sox by 32 runs. The Phillies, with their pitching and power at the plate, will look to do major damage to a team that has seen better days.
National League East Standings
With the Phillies’ win against the Pirates on Sunday afternoon, the Mets are now only 0.5 games ahead of Philadelphia. A four-game series against Colorado for the Phillies is a beautiful opportunity to lower that number and maybe even take over the throne for first place, as the Mets go to Boston for a three-game set this week.
The Phillies should look at this series with the intent to do damage, as a four-game sweep is very possible for this ball club. Three or four wins would put the Phillies in an extremely good place in the National League East.
Power On the Way
With this Phillies lineup on paper, there is a history of slugging, which has shown to be on and off. With that being said, some Phillies, such as Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper, and others, will be looking soon to break out of a power outage in this series. On the other hand, Kyle Schwarber will be looking to steal the league lead in home runs and rack up a 300th career home run, which many feel is coming after Harper’s 1,000th RBI. Schwarber is only one dinger away from the historic mark.
No matter the occasion, Coors Field, which lies in Denver, Colorado, will be the perfect park to perform in, with the altitude being known to carry the ball a long way.
This may also be a factor in the Phillies’ hopes to complete a sweep on the road in Denver, with the help of the bats.
