A game that doesn’t even reflect the box score. The Philadelphia Phillies picked up their third win in a row Saturday afternoon, defeating the Miami Marlins 11-10. It was a dominant performance from the entirety of the Phillies’ offense as every starter except Nick Castellanos recorded a hit. As a team, they totaled 18 hits, seven being doubles.
Unfortunately, all of that was nearly wasted as Jordan Romano allowed two runs and six runs to be scored in the top of the ninth and nearly blew the game.
Bryson Stott had another great day in the leadoff spot, finishing with three hits, three RBI’s, and scoring two runs, while Turner scored two runs as well, knocked in two runs of his own, and had four hits. Johan Rojas also finished with three hits in the win.
Unlike the previous two games, the Phillies were unable to tack on any runs in the first two innings, despite getting a leadoff walk and a stolen base in the first from Stott and a double from J.T. Realmuto.
However, in the top of the third, Taijuan Walker ran into trouble after a leadoff single from Graham Pauley and an error from Alec Bohm put runners on the corners with no outs. He battled through getting a ground ball out at home, and then two more groundouts to end the inning unscathed.
In the bottom half of the third, the Phillies finally got on the board. Rojas led off the inning with a double down the left field line and scored two batters later thanks to a single by Trea Turner. Back-to-back walks by Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber loaded the bases for Castellanos. Castellanos smoked a lineout to right, but it was deep enough to score Turner from third for a sac fly.
Now up 2-0, Max Kepler doubled that quickly with a two-run double over Kyle Stowers‘ head for his first RBIs with runners in scoring position on the season.
The Marlins did respond. Walker walked the first two batters of the fourth inning, and two groundouts allowed Miami to get their first run on the board.
Unfortunately for the Marlins, the Phillies hit parade just kept on chugging. Bohm and Rojas each singled to kick off the Phillies’ half of the fourth, and a double to the right field wall by Stott scored both runs to make it 6-1.
Stott didn’t last long on second base as Turner smoked a double to left, but three runs in the fourth were all the Phillies could get.
After four innings of work, Walker was pulled in relief for Matt Strahm, who allowed back-to-back singles to kick off the fifth, but was able to make it out of the inning thanks to a big double play.
The Phillies added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a double from Bohm and Rojas’ third hit of the afternoon, a single to center scored Bohm. Rojas stole second and scored thanks to Stott’s RBI single off the bat.
It took until the sixth inning, but the Marlins finally put a big inning together. Carlos Hernandez was on the mound for Philadelphia and allowed a leadoff single to Dane Myers and hit Matt Mervis to put two runners on. A double by Griffin Conine brought in one run, and two batters later Liam Hicks blooped a single to left scoring two more runs to make it 9-4 Phillies.
Both teams went scoreless in their next at-bats, but the Phillies added onto their lead in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Stott and Turner both singled to bring up Harper, who, on the first pitch of that at-bat, smoked a ball to right for an RBI double. Schwarber then followed that up with a line drive single to score Turner, making it 11-4 Phillies.
In the top of the eighth, Joe Ross was able to come out clean after allowing two hits, and Anthony Bender did the same for the Marlins in the bottom half of the inning. Jordan Romano then came on in the ninth to finish off the game for the Phillies.
Romano allowed a leadoff single to Jesús Sánchez, and that was followed up by a single by Eric Wagaman to put runners on the corners with no outs. On the next pitch, Meyers smoked a ball down the left field line for a three-run home run to make it a four-run game. The damage wasn’t done there as Javier Sanoja singled and scored after a double from Pauley. Up came Hicks who smoked a fly ball to right that found it’s way over the wall for a two-run home run to make it a one-run game.
Rob Thomson then pulled Romano from the game after allowing six runs in the ninth and brought in Jose Alvarado for the save. Alvarado needed just two pitches as he managed to get Xavier Edwards to fly out to right to pick up the 11-10 win.
