Offensive woes continue as Flyers shut out in 2-0 loss

The Flyers dropped to 1-7 in their last 8 games tonight with a hard-fought loss over one of the NHL’s best teams in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy and Ivan Fedotov went save for save tonight, but the Lighting’s early goal would prove to be too much for the Flyers to overcome.

Are they saving the goals for next year?

It has been a brutal stretch offensively for the Flyers in March. One of the biggest reasons for the team’s 2-7 record this month has been scoring the 31st most goals in the stretch, leading only a shorthanded Wild team who have played 2 fewer games.

The problem tonight was the same problem we’ve had for the past 4 seasons. With 5 power play opportunities tonight, the Flyers once again failed to score on any of them. The unit as a whole has dropped down to an atrocious 14.7% on the year, putting them 3rd worst in the league ahead of just Anaheim and the Islanders.

The biggest reason for the team’s offensive success out of the break was how red-hot Owen Tippett and Matvei Michkov were, they were leading at that point the best line in hockey. Predictably they fell back down to Earth and since the depth was gutted at the deadline in exchange for futures there has been next to nothing on offense.

Wasted Fedotov masterclass

For as rough a year as it’s been for Fedotov, he was incredible tonight. Against one of the, if not the hottest offenses in hockey he was a brick wall in the net. After giving up an early goal to an all-alone Nikita Kucherov in the first period, Fedotov was perfect from then on.

Even if the effort was wasted, we can at least appreciate the growth he has made in March. Outside of his start against Ottawa, Fedotov has shown serious improvement, with impressive nights against the Jets and Devils, as well as his effort against the Lightning this time around.

What’s next for the Flyers?

The schedule isn’t getting any easier in the short term. They’ll get a 2-day break before a game in Washington, then in Dallas, then Chicago, and the road trip ends in Toronto against Scott Laughton and the Leafs. 3 playoff teams fighting for positioning and Chicago.

It’s again time to get the tanks rolling for the Flyers as major changes throughout the staff and roster loom this summer.
