Flyers trade Scott Laughton to Maple Leafs for first-round pick, Nikita Grebyonkin

Scott Laughton‘s 12-year tenure with the Flyers has come to an end.
After being in trade talks for seemingly years, the Flyers dealt their alternate captain to the Maple Leafs, along with a fourth-round pick and sixth-round pick, in exchange for Nikita Grebenkin and a conditional 2027 first-round pick, which is top-10 protected.
The Flyers are retaining 50 percent of Laughton’s contract. He has one year left on his deal, with a $3 million cap hit.
The 30-year-old Laughton was drafted by Philadelphia 20th overall in 2012. The versatile forward has played 660 games for the Flyers, scoring 106 goals and 265 total points.
With the Flyers going through their rebuild, Laughton has been one of the more intriguing trade targets for various clubs. He plays multiple positions, has tons of intensities, is an elite penalty killer, and is an excellent locker room guy.
Laughton has been the heart of the Flyers on and off the ice, and moving on from a guy like that is not easy. But, Daniel Briere made the tough call. With a rebuilding team that is about to miss the playoffs for the fifth straight year, deals like this need to be made.
Grebyonkin, on the other hand, was a 5th-round pick by Toronto in 2022.
The 21-year-old, 6’2, 209-pound winger with a left-handed shot had significant play in different Russian leagues, including winning the KHL Rookie of the Year in 2023.
He started this season in Toronto, but after seven pointless games, he went down to their AHL club, the Toronto Marlies, where he has nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 39 games.
It is unclear where Grebyonkin will report when he comes to Philadelphia, but he is very young and has a lot of potential.
And do not look past the 2027 first-rounder. The Flyers now have six first-round picks to work with from 2025-27 (three in 2025, one in 2026, two in 2027). That is ridiculous.
The trade deadline is Friday, March 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET. Earlier, the Flyers acquired a third-round pick in 2027 from the Kings in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko and a seventh-rounder in 2025.
