The Flyers lost to the best team in the NHL, the Winnipeg Jets, 4-1 in the Wells Fargo Center. The main comment after the game from John Tortorella was: “My thoughts about the game tonight will stay in the locker room. What I say up here tonight to you guys will do the team no good.”
Torts had expected a good response from his team after losing their last game 6-3 against the Calgary Flames. He not only expected a good effort from his overall team but some of his comments this morning were how he was anxious to see Samuel Ersson bounce back. He got none of the above.
In the first period, it was pretty evenly played at 5 on 5. The Flyers weren’t overplayed. Although, there were two penalties in the period, both of them against the Flyers, letting the best power play in the NHL strike twice. Mark Scheifele, assisted by Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor, got the Jets on the board. Ersson stopped the initial shot on Vilardi but the rebound went straight to Scheifele, and Ersson couldn’t stop the second shot.

Late in the first period, Nikolaj Ehlers scored the second goal for the Jets. The goal was assisted by Scheifele and Vilardi. Ersson couldn’t do much on this one. A perfect play from the Jets’ unit and Ehlers was in front of the net, received the pass from Scheifele, and elevated the puck to beat Ersson.

After trailing by two after one, things didn’t go much better for the Flyers in the first half of the second, as Kyle Connor gave the Jets a 3-0 lead, assisted by Scheifele and Vilardi who both had 3 points tonight. The goal from Connor is one of those that Ersson would like to have back. It was a low long distance shot from the side without any traffic or deflection. The puck went between his arm on the blocker’s side.

In the same timeframe, first half of the second period, the Jets scored again and had a 4-0 lead via Aadam Lowry, assisted by Mason Appleton and Nino Niederreiter. Travis Sanheim and Travis Konecny both tried to intercept the pass but it didn’t happen. The Flyers looked completely disconnected during this period.

In the third period, with less than 3 minutes left, Matvei Michkov prevented the shutout with a top-corner shot to beat Eric Comrie.
No. 20 on the season for MM39.

It will now be interesting to see what will happen before the trade deadline tomorrow, Friday, March 7 at 3 pm ET. Will Scott Laughton still be a Flyer? What other small (or bigger) moves will Daniel Briere do?
We shall see.
