60 Minutes To History — Eagles vs. Chiefs Super Bowl LIX Preview

Folks we have made it to Super Bowl LIX. After a season of screaming matches with fans, record-breaking performances, and incredible defensive showings, the Eagles return to the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons, seeking their second title in franchise history. Like the last time they were in the big game, their opponent is none other than the mighty Kansas City Chiefs.

Back in 2023, it was dubbed the Kelce Bowl, Travis Kelce vs. Jason Kelce. The Eagles walked into Super Bowl LVII in Glendale as slight favorites against the Chiefs and walked out as losers. The Birds were no match for Patrick Mahomes and former Eagles head coach Andy Reid, as the duo picked up their second Super Bowl win.

Since that loss, the Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl the following season, this time against the San Francisco 49ers for their second consecutive championship. Now a year later, the Chiefs are attempting to become the first NFL franchise to win three straight Super Bowls.

The only thing preventing that from happening is the Philadelphia Eagles. However, this isn’t the same Eagles team that lost to the Chiefs the last team these two met the last time a championship was on the line.

The defense has 100% been upgraded since that game. From Linval Joseph and Robert Quinn on the defensive line, Kyzir White and T.J. Edwards at linebacker, and James Bradberry and Marcus Epps in the secondary, this team’s starting unit looks very different just two years later.

Howie Roseman and the Eagles front office have made massive changes in the past couple of years acquiring players like Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Zack Baun, to vastly improve the defensive side of the ball.

Led by former head coach, now defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, this Eagles defense has been one of if not the best units in the entire league this season. Whether it’s getting after the quarterback, plugging up gaps and stopping runs, or locking down the team’s top wide receivers, the Eagles have excelled on all levels.

On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest change comes in the form of one man and he goes by the name Saquon Barkley. Barkley was the big home run signing of the offseason for the Eagles, and it is safe to say that Barkley has hit it out of the park and then some since joining the Eagles nearly a year ago.

Barkley became the ninth man to rush for 2,000 yards in a season and the first Eagles player to do it. On top of that, Barkley also took home the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award and finished in third place for NFL MVP. He was dominant all year and with Jalen Hurts, he helped transform the Eagles offense into one the best running offenses in NFL history.

Two years ago, the Eagles had Barkley’s former Penn State teammate Miles Sanders at running back, and while Sanders wasn’t the worst player, it’s night and day when you’re comparing him and Barkley. The Eagles were unsuccessful in establishing a run game through their running backs in the previous Super Bowl, but with Barkley that is a whole different story.

While this Eagles team is good and playing some of their best football right now, they’re still playing the back-to-back defending champs. Mahomes Magic is a real thing as no matter what the score is and no matter how much time is left, the Chiefs flat-out found ways to win. Reid has fully cemented himself as one of the greatest head coaches of all time and consistently finds ways for his team to pull out wins.

It’s going to be a battle on Sunday in New Orleans when these two teams go to battle in the Ceasers Superdome. History will be made as either the Chiefs will secure the first three-peat in Super Bowl history, or Barkley will cap off one of the greatest running back seasons of all time and the Eagles will become the 16th franchise to win multiple Super Bowls.
