Flyers Lose Second in a Row at Home to Hurricanes

It was a game that was close… until it wasn’t.
The Flyers faced off against one of the NHL’s best teams Wednesday night in a home matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes. Unfortunately for the Flyers, there wasn’t much that was noteworthy about this game, as the more talented team was able to win the game they were supposed to win. Carolina won 4-1 to put themselves back on top of the Metropolitan Division with 28 points and a 14-4-0 record. The Flyers on the other hand fall back to two games below hockey .500 at 8-10-2, placing them sixth in the same division.
The game started and appeared like it was going to be a blowout from the start when Flyers goalie Ivan Fedotov let up a goal to Jalen Chatfield in the first 30 seconds of the game. However, Fedotov managed to settle in quite well for the next two periods after this mistake, stopping the next 19 shots that came his way.
The Flyers would tie it up early in the second off of Ryan Poehling’s first goal of the year. The score would remain 1-1 for the remainder of the second period.
The third period was when problems began to arise for Philadelphia. The barrage of the Carolina shots eventually got to Fedotov, who was beaten by Sebastian Aho early in the third period. The score may have been close but the level of competition was not. In the final two periods, the Flyers were outshot 27 to eight. That is not a sustainable disparity.
The dam finally broke when Jordan Staal and Jack Roslovic each scored within a minute of each other. This gave the Hurricane a 4-1 lead and effectively put the game out of reach.
There’s not much else to say about this game. There were no standout performances for the Flyers. No notable plays. This was just an instance of one team being better than the other and playing like it. No one likes these types of games but they’re something a rebuilding franchise has to accept and move on from. Onto the next.
The Flyers’ next game will be against the Blackhawks at home at 1:00 pm EST on November 23. The game can be watched on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
