Eagles Take Down Jaguars Despite Nick Sirianni’s Questionable Decisions
Hunter Martin / Philadelphia Eagles
The Birds escaped the Jaguars on Sunday in a tight 28-23 victory, sealing it with a clutch Nakobe Dean interception in crunch time.
Philadelphia is now 6-2 and 4-0 in the “Baldinni” era.
The Eagles were finally able to score in the first quarter this year with a Saquon Barkley touchdown, which was his first in the Linc.
Nick Sirianni was able to take advantage of the momentum that was gained early, scoring a field goal and another touchdown in the 2nd quarter with Saquon. However, a questionable decision to go for 2 resulted in Philly leading 16-0 at the half instead of 17.
Sirianni kept his aggressiveness when Jalen Hurts ran for a touchdown in the 3rd, allowing Philly to take a 22-0 lead. The Eagles went for 2 and once again, did not convert it.
Jacksonville responded with a Trevor Lawrence touchdown and two-point conversion and a controversial scoop-and-score for the defense, along with another conversion. Now, instead of a 24-16 lead, Jacksonville was within a touchdown.
DeVonta Smith‘s incredible one-handed touchdown grab put Philly up 28-16, but for some reason, Sirianni elected to go for two a third time.
As expected, it was not converted.
Jacksonville stormed down the field to score a touchdown and extra point and was able to get the ball back late with a chance to win the game.
Luckily, Dean intercepted a Lawrence overthrow, leading to a Philadelphia victory.
The Birds went 0-3 in 2-point conversions and additionally went for it on 4th down multiple times in field goal range, not converting. Sirianni left a total of 9 points on the board, making this game much tighter than it needed to be.
However, a win is a win and the Eagles have now won 4 straight after a mediocre first 4 games.
Philadelphia now goes on a tough stretch, where they will take on the Cowboys, Commanders, Rams, and Ravens 4 weeks in a row. These games will be huge in determining whether Philly can hang with heavy-hitting teams and is a genuine contender. We’ll see if the Birds are ready for the competition.
