Flyers Earn First Loss of the Season Against the Flames in Calgary

The Flyers have officially lost their first game of the 2024-2025 NHL season in their second game of the year against the Calgary Flames. The game was also the first of the year for goalie Ivan Fedotov, who made his debut with the team late last year. Fedotov ultimately put in a strong performance, saving 27 or 32 shots for a .844 save percentage, but it was ultimately not enough.
The Flames got the scoring started with a pair of goals from Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar coming roughly two minutes apart from each other.
The Flyers would be the next to get on the board when Travis Konecny scored his first goal of the year off an assist from Scott Laughton and Erik Johnson. Konecny’s goal was also a shorty, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering he led the NHL in short-handed goals last year with six.
The Flames would respond quickly after Nazem Kadri scored a power play goal during a Calgary 5 on 3 advantage. This goal highlighted the Flyers main issue in tonights game; too many penalties, as Weegar’s first period goal also came on the power play. Through the first two periods, the Flyers had accrued 25 penalty minutes to Calgary’s 10.
The Flyers would get the last laugh before the period ended however, as Joel Farabee would net his first goal of the year in the final two minutes of the second period, bringing Philadelphia back to within one with the score at 3-2.
Neither team would score for nearly the first 15 minutes of the third period, with both goalies making impressive saves, before Michael Backlund capitalized on a two-on-one rush to push the Flames lead up to 4-2. This would be immediately followed by Huberdeau’s second goal of the night, ending what was a mostly promising debut for Fedotov on a bit of a sour note.
On a positive note, shortly following this goal, Matvei Michkov recorded his first-ever NHL point after assisting Travis Konecny on a power play goal to bring the score to 5-3.
This was swiftly followed by a Nazem Kadri empty net goal, putting the Flames up by three with a score of 6-3, which would end up being the final score of the game.
The Flyers’ next game will be another away game in Western Canada against the 0-2-0 Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night at 10 pm, EST.
