The Phillies’ best pitcher from the first half of the season is back.
Prior to Saturday night’s game against the Royals, the Phillies reinstated Ranger Suarez from the 15-day injured list. To make room for Suarez on the 26-man roster, Tyler Gilbert was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley following Friday night’s game.
Suarez will start Saturday night in Kansas City.
Suarez’s last start came on July 22 when he allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings to the Twins in a 7-2 loss. It was his fourth straight non-quality start. Then, he proceeded to miss just over a month with lower-back tightness, which had been lingering prior to the All-Star break, which was roughly the time when he started to cool off from an insane start to the season.
When I say insane, I mean Cy Young favorite numbers. In his first 16 starts, Suarez posted a 1.83 ERA in 98 1/3 innings. His last four starts have boosted the ERA to 2.87 over 119 1/3 innings this season. Those are still really good numbers.
It has been rough times for the Phils since Suarez’s departure to the IL, so his returning to the rotation can only help.
