As the buzzer sounded on the 2024 MLB trade deadline, the Phillies and Orioles made a deal.

They have acquired right-handed pitching prospects Seth Johnson and Moises Chace from Baltimore in exchange for Gregory SotoKiley McDaniel of ESPN first reported Johnson to the Phillies. Todd Zolecki of MLB.com was first with Chace to Philadelphia. And Jim Salisbury was first with Soto going to the Orioles.

Johnson, who was on the Orioles’ 40-man roster, is the No. 12 prospect in the Orioles system, according to Baseball America. He has a 2.63 ERA in 18 starts this season, including a 1.32 WHIP and 61 strikeouts. Johnson has been optioned to Double-A Reading.

Chace has a 3.46 ERA in 17 games, including nine starts. He has 76 strikeouts in 52 innings and a 1.29 WHIP.

The Phillies traded for Soto following the 2022 National League championship season. He was an All-Star that season but has never really found his footing in Philadelphia over the past two seasons. In 43 appearances and 35.1 innings pitched this season Soto has a 4.08 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.

Soto will join former Phils Seranthony Dominguez and Craig Kimbrel in the Orioles bullpen. So you already know they are about to become the best back-end bullpen in the league because that is how the Phillies’ luck works.
