Phillies stumble into All-Star Break with 18-3 loss to Oakland
Kyle Ross/USA TODAY Sports
Let’s hope this was just a kind of trap series. The Phillies were looking too far ahead to the long break hopefully. Against the disaster class Athletics, the Phils lost the rubber game of a 3-game series by 15 runs at home nevertheless.
Things got so ugly Garrett Stubbs was given his 4th career pitching appearance to close things out in the 9th inning.
Let’s break down this disappointing way to enter one of the most fun weeks in baseball.
Michael Mercado isn’t ready
Orion Kerkering actually got the start today, but he only pitched through the first inning of play, from there the bump was handed to rookie Michael Mercado.
Ever since his eye-opening performance against the Cubs, it has been nothing but downhill since. Today he pitched 4.0 innings and allowed 6 runs and was credited with the loss.
After that Seranthony Dominguez pitched a disastrous 1.2 innings where he got shelled for 4 ER, this being especially disappointing because it looked like Seranthony may have been recovering from his awful start to the season!
Seemingly unable to buy good pitching the Phillies sent out Jose Ruiz who also was shelled allowing 3ER in 1.0 innings.
Out came Stubby for the 9th inning and at least he has an excuse for allowing 5 ER. Lawrence Butler led the way for the A’s with not one, not two, but three homers for Oakland.
At least Trea’s hot at the dish
Rough day for mostly everyone on the Phillies offense but for Trea Turner that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Trea went yard in the 1st inning giving him his 8th home run in only 12 games!
After that the only runs scored would be from a Bryson Stott sac-fly turned wild throw from Miguel Andjuar which would bring home 2 to, at the time, make it 7-3.
Alec Bohm had himself a solid day going 2-4 as he prepares for his appearance in the Home Run Derby tomorrow night! Stay tuned because a win for Bohmer might be the funniest thing ever
