76ers Having Discussion with Klay Thompson
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports
With NBA free agency officially underway the rumors have started flying, with the Sixers being named in many of them.
The latest report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski is that Klay Thompson plans to have discussions with the Mavericks, Lakers, Clippers, and 76ers in the opening hours of free agency. He could be a part of a sign-and-trade with the Warriors.
While Thompson is a big name, he is nowhere near the player he once was. In 2023-24 Thompson averaged 17.9 points per game with a 38.7 three-point percentage. Both of these numbers are down from his career averages, but I still think bringing Klay in would be a good idea.
Joel Embiid has been able to create open threes for shooters his whole career, and Thompson would be able to bring championship DNA to an organization that is obviously missing it. As the fourth option on this team or even a bench piece, Klay can be very valuable.
Thompson does have some injury concerns, as he has suffered some major injuries recently, but he would not be relied on to be the team’s second option like he was in Golden State. I would not give him a long-term deal, but for two years, it would be worth it.
