Back at the Bank — Series Preview: Padres at Phillies, June 17 – 19

After a huge 11-inning victory in game one against Baltimore, the Phillies collapsed in the final two games of the series, suffering two consecutive losses and dropping the series. Now, the Phils have lost five of their last seven games, and with a Padres team that just got swept by the fourth-place Mets coming to town, the Phillies will look to capitalize on the Padres’ struggles.

Last Time They Met

The Phillies and Padres last faced off in late April, and with 22 runs scored across three games in San Diego, the Phillies walked away with a sweep. Alec Bohm, who now leads the National League in votes to start the All-Star game at third base, recorded a whopping six hits in the series. J.T. Realmuto, who recently hit the IL, had four hits and five RBI.

In games one and two, Aaron Nola and Ranger Suarez, respectively, threw eight dominant innings and earned the win. In the series finale, Taijuan Walker made his first start of the season, going 6.1 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.

Back on their Turf

It’s been almost two weeks since the Phillies got to embrace the fans and the atmosphere of Citizens Bank Park. Of course, many Phillies supporters made the trek across the pond for the London Series and to Camden Yards over the weekend, but nothing is comparable to a home Phillies game. In games at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies are 27-9, which is the best home record in the National League.

And as you would expect, many of the Phillies’ starters have performed best right here in South Philly. First baseman Bryce Harper has a .313 average and a 1.025 OPS during home games, and he has hit 11 of his 15 home runs at the Bank. Trea Turner, who was just taken off the injured list today, has a .955 OPS in home games.

Christopher Sanchez, who is slated to be on the bump for game one, has a 1.95 ERA and a 2-1 record at home. Jeff Hoffman, a near-lock to make an appearance in the All-Star game, has allowed just a single run at Citizens Bank Park all season.

With Trea Turner’s return and the Phillies back on their home turf for the first time since June 5, now is the time for the Phillies to get hot.
