How Flyers can still somehow make playoffs

Game 82 of the 2023-24 season for the Flyers takes place at the Wells Fargo Center, with there still being a shot at making the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
How? Well, it may take a blessing.
- Flyers must beat the Washington Capitals in regulation on Tuesday
- Detroit Red Wings must lose to the Montreal Canadians in regulation on Tuesday
- Pittsburgh Penguins must lose to the New York Islanders in regulation on Wednesday
As the great Al Michaels once said, do you believe in miracles?
The Flyers cannot earn the third metropolitan spot, as the Islanders secured that spot on Saturday. So the Isles have nothing to play for against the Penguins on Wednesday, which is bad news for Philly.
Washington, who is coming off a 2-0 win at home against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, is the biggest domino for the Flyers. If they are able to beat the Caps in regulation, the two clubs would be knotted in three tiebreakers: regulation wins (31), regulation/overtime wins (35), and overall wins (39). So the tiebreaker would come down to points in the regular-season series. The Flyers, with a regulation win, would overthrow the Capitals with four points compared to Washington’s three.
If the game goes over 60 minutes, the Capitals would finish ahead of them with 90 points.
Then, the Flyers would need some help, which they got none of on Saturday.
If Detroit wins or loses after regulation against the Canadiens, Philadephia’s season is over. They need the Red Wings to lose in regulation, as they would both have 89 points and the Flyers would hold the tiebreaker in regulation wins.
If that happens, then it all comes down to Wednesday night in Long Island.
If the Penguins earn a point with the game going into overtime, they would hold the tiebreaker over the Flyers because of more regulation wins.
And as I mentioned earlier, the Islanders already clinched the final metro spot on Saturday, so the Isles have nothing to play for.
Honestly, as long as the Penguins miss the playoffs I am happy.
