The Flyers fell 4-1 in Montreal in a game where they were “expected to win.” A missed opportunity for the Flyers.

Let’s recap the game.

First Period

In the first part of the first period, nothing much happened. The Flyers got a power play and didn’t do much with it. A few minutes later, with 7:02 left, Montreal will get the first goal of the game from Nick Suzuki on the powerplay. Per the broadcast, it’s the first powerplay in 17 attempts for Montreal.

Less than 5 minutes after that first goal, the Montreal Canadiens will double their lead. This time, it’s a goal from Ylönen. It’s his first goal since 43 games per Flyers Nation.

The period ended 2-0 Montreal with a total of 11 shots on goal and only 5 for the Flyers.

Second Period

In terms of goal scoring, the score was still 2-0 for the Canadiens after the second period. The Flyers got a bit more offense than in the first period but couldn’t find a way to score a goal.

In total, 15 shots on goal this period: 9 for the Flyers.

Third Period

The offense that the Flyers had in the second period (especially late in the period) moved forward to the third period. The Flyers started strong and finally scored a goal. It’s Hathaway, but due to a kicking motion, the goal was disallowed.

Less than 5 minutes after that goal was disallowed, the Flyers would score another goal, which would be disallowed too. This time it was Tyson Foerster who scored, but it was offside! The Flyers will then have 2 disallowed goals in the first 6 minutes of the third period.

The Flyers will keep pushing in the third period, but it will be too little too late. The Flyers will lose the game 4-1 with 2 empty netters for Montreal. The only goal from the Flyers will be, from Owen Tippett, in the final minutes of the game after the game is pretty much over.

Note from game

This game is a big miss for the Flyers. We can say that in terms of teams they “should beat” but also because of the other matchups that were happening at the same time as the Flyers game.

Both the Caps and the Wings lost in regulation, respectively, 5-1 against Toronto and 4-0 against the Canes. It was a huge opportunity for the Flyers to get some distance from the other playoff rivals.

We will have to see in the next few weeks if this game will be a playoff “breaker” or close to it.
