The Flyers fell 6-5 to the Boston Bruins at the TD Garden and will move 34-26-8 overall. They have now lost 2 games in a row and are 2-3-0 in their past 5 games. The Flyers are also 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.
Let’s recap the game.
First Period
The Flyers scored the first goal of the game, off the rush, by Ryan Poehling. It was a huge early goal for the Flyers assisted by Hathaway, who made the big pass, and Zamula.
The Bruins tied the game in the final stretch of the first period. Morgan Geekie scored with less than 5 minutes to go with assists from DeBrusk and Wotherspoon.
Although that late goal, the Flyers played a good first period: 1-1 game.
Second Period
In the second period, the Flyers took their lead back with a goal from Joel Farabee in the second part of the second period. The goal was scored just after the powerplay for the Flyers ended. It was a massive tip from Joel Farabee off a blue-line shot from York. The Flyers threw it at the net and it paid off.
It didn’t take time though as the Bruins tied it a few minutes later on the powerplay. Charlie Coyle from Marchand and Zacha get back the game even.
Like the first period, the Flyers played a good period. Yes, they gave up some chances but Sandstrom made some huge saves and the Flyers generated some offense: 2-2 game.
Third Period
It was a huge third period in terms of action.
The period started at 4 on 4 because of an end-of-a-period scrum in the second period. It didn’t take long for the Bruins to use that space to score an early goal from Charlie Coyle. After that goal, the Bruins scored 2 more goals from Beecher and DeBrusk to make it 5-2.
A few minutes after that third Bruins goal of the period, the Flyers get a powerplay and start to find their game back. Nic Deslauriers scores with less than 6 minutes left in the period to make it 5-3. After that goal, the Flyers kept playing and scored another goal.
A minute after the Deslauriers goal, Morgan Frost scored a tremendous breakaway goal between the legs to make it 5-4.
The Flyers played a good overall game, but it wasn’t enough. That’s what happens when you play a team that is better than you in a lot of aspects of the game. You can’t take a break or have a bad stretch during the game.
The Flyers needed to play a full 60 minutes, they played a good 55 minutes and it cost them the game.
They may have lost anyway, but they needed a point out of this game, and they didn’t. The Flyers will have to shake this game off and get back at it on Tuesday, at home, against Toronto.
In terms of the performance of Felix Sandstrom, he didn’t play a bad game. We can even say that the 6th goal was a good shoot.
But that’s the problem with Felix, he needs to be consistent. The Flyers had the momentum and were going for the comeback. He must be able to make a save to help the Flyers get a chance. Like most nights he plays, he didn’t make “that save” tonight.
