Flyers allow 5 straight goals to Capitals in loss

John Tortorella and his Philadelphia Flyers took on the Washington Capitals Friday night in their second game against each other this season. The Flyers defeated the Capitals the last time they faced them 4-3 after the game went to a shootout. The Flyers headed into this matchup in good vides as they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 at the Wells Fargo before heading down to Washington for Friday’s matchup.

The 1st period saw the Flyers cruising on the ice as they were able to achieve a cushioned lead by the end of the 1st period. The first notch in the score column for the Flyers came courtesy of Bobby Brink as he was able to dish a snap shot into the net to propel the Flyers into the lead. The second goal of the night came 18 minutes and 23 seconds into the 1st when Owen Tippett was able to secure a wrist shot for a goal that took us into the second period with a 2-0 Flyers lead.

The 2nd period was quite the opposite for the Flyers as the Flyers went scoreless throughout the 2nd as they were torn apart on defense. Alex Ovechkin led off the Capitals with a snapshot that finally put the Capitals on the board. Sonny Milano tied up the game as he was able to get an unassisted goal with 9 minutes and 55 seconds to go in the 2nd. The Capitals finally took the lead as John Carlson snagged a backhanded shot that sent the Capitals into the 3rd ahead of the Flyers 3-2.

The Flyers were outworked in this period as the Capitals’ defense continued skating circles around the Flyer. Dylan Strome achieved his first goal of the night from a wrist shot that put the Capitals even further ahead at 4-2. If that wasn’t enough, the game was secured for the Capitals as with 6 minutes and 4 seconds left to go, Anthony Mantha sent a snapshot right past Samuel Ersson that secured the win for the Capitals.

The Flyers showed a strong 1st period but were eventually outworked letting up 5 unanswered that gave the Capitals an easy path to their 5-2 win. The Flyers are back home Saturday to face off against the Ottowa Senators at the Wells Fargo Center.
