Tonight the Philadelphia Flyers (29-19-7) are taking on the local New Jersey Devils (27-22-4) outside in the elements of East Rutherford, New Jersey at MetLife Stadium. These teams have faced each other twice before this with each of them taking home a single win. Although they have seen each other already this season, there is no way to prepare for a game like the Stadium Series.

Gametime temperatures will be around 31 degrees Fahrenheit with wind gusts up to 22 miles per hour. The “feels like” temperature for puck drop will be down to a frigid 18 degrees Fahrenheit. Both teams will have to adjust to the cold as most hockey rinks are usually in the 50-60-degree range when you talk about the temperature.

This Stadium Series matchup boils down to one word, playoffs. The Flyers are sitting at 3rd in the Metro currently with the Devils just 4 points behind. This game gives both teams a huge opportunity to gain momentum in a playoff race that is heating up.

The Flyers are no stranger to playing outdoors as they have played in 4 outdoor games in the past. In 2010 The Flyers were defeated by the Bruins 2-1 at Fenway Park. 2 years later in 2012 the Rangers defeated the Flyers 3-2 in the Flyers’ backyard of Citizens Bank Park. Once again in 2017, the Flyers were defeated 4-2 by the Penguins in Heinz Field. The Flyers reached their first outdoor win in Lincoln Financial Field across the street from the Wells Fargo Center when they beat the Penguins with an overtime game-winner from Claude Giroux that won them the game 4-3. The Flyer’s most recent outdoor game and farthest was played just off Lake Tahoe at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada where they lost to the Bruins in a crushing 7-3 loss.

Sean Couturier gave the green light on his participation in tonight’s game after being struck by a slashing penalty a few days ago from Toronto’s Tyler Bertuzzi. Cameron York was injured in the matchup against Toronto as well and is currently a game-time decision to see if he will be participating in the Stadium Series matchup against the Devils.

A lot is on the line tonight in East Rutherford and hopefully, John Tortorella and the entire Philadelphia Flyers can bring a Stadium Series Victory to Philadelphia.
