Joel Embiid‘s MVP bid is over after Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that Embiid will miss an extended period of time due to a procedure he will undergo later this week.
Embiid was having one of the greatest offensive seasons in NBA history, but unfortunately, he won’t be able to turn this absolute dominance into any accolades for his resume. However, this procedure is for the best and will help the Sixers in the long run.
Daryl Morey now has a big decision to make this week. Either he sticks with what he has and rides it out until Embiid comes back or he trades assets to add a star like Lauri Markkanen or Dejounte Murray. It may make sense for Morey to trade for or sign a center as Philadelphia is now weak in that position.
This injury is a huge blow to Philly, but not is all lost. Tyrese Maxey now has the chance to prove that he can play at an All-NBA level and keep the Sixers in contention for a top seed in the East. It’s safe to say that if this team wants to stay elite, they need to make some major adjustments for the time being.
