The Philadelphia Union took on new expansion side Charlotte FC at Subaru Park last night and did the job securing the home win. The Union won 2-0 and kept their place as number 1 in the East.
The Union started off hot and threw a quick punch to Charlotte’s jaw by striking in the 4th minute. The goal was magnificent team play with Kai Wagner starting the attack. He hit an incredible long ball over the top and just like that Sergio Santos was in behind Charlotte’s backline looking for a teammate to cross the ball too. Sure enough, Julian Carranza was in the right place at the right time, and finished the ball into the back of the net, scoring his first goal for the Union.
The Union would close out the half with the score 1-0.
The Union came out of the tunnel hot again and just one minute into the second half doubled their lead. Daniel Gazdag capitalized off of an atrocious goalkeeping error by Charlotte. In all honesty I have no idea what the goalkeeper was thinking with that ball, but he panicked under Union’s pressure and passed it directly to Gazdag at the top of the box. Gazdag was gifted a gimme and calmly passed it into the back of the net. With that goal, Gazdag is now tied second in the league in goals.
The Union would keep another shutout (Andre Blake’s third also having him tied for second in shutouts) and had a comfortable 2-0 win at home.
In all, this was a great performance by the Union and I am really happy with how they played. I don’t want to get too optimistic, but I really think this could be our year.
