Jalen Hurts named starting quarterback versus Saints

On Sunday afternoon the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Green Bay Packers 30-16. In the middle of the third-quarter, head coach Doug Pederson benched struggling quarterback Carson Wentz for the Eagles second-round pick in the 2020 draft rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts. With some shock, Jalen Hurts threw for 109 yards, he threw one touchdown and one interception. Jalen Hurts was very good. This started another quarterback controversy (always Philly). Pederson had to make a very challenging decision, who should start week fourteen against the number one NFC seeded New Orleans Saints. On Tuesday afternoon, Pederson made his decision.

Back in April, the Eagles made one of the most controversial draft picks in Eagles history. The Eagles were in need of wide receivers, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, defensive lineman, and running backs. The Eagles started off the draft as with their twenty-first pick they chose wide receiver Jalen Reagor from TCU. Good job choosing a wide receiver, but you chose the wrong one. The Eagles could’ve chosen Justin Jefferey out of LSU, Brandon Aiyuk out of ASU, and that just to name two off the top of my head.

The Eagles were now heading into the second-round with the fifty-third pick. The Eagles now could use some defense and another wide receiver. The Eagles end up making a very controversial pick that made social media lose their mind. They chose Heisman runner-up quarterback Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma. Yes, he was the runner up for the Heisman trophy (college football’s MVP award), but the Eagles did not need a quarterback. There were so many other better options that could’ve worked like a wide receiver, or a cornerback, or anything else. But they chose a quarterback that would end up being their backup quarterback.

Throughout the season so far, Pederson would put Hurts in at running back, wide receiver, and usually quarterback. Hurts would play from two to four snaps a game. He would go in, and then go out. This made the fans very upset as Hurts would usually end up running the ball anyway. All until Sunday night in Green Bay when there were seven minutes left in the third-quarter when Pederson decided to bench starting quarterback Carson Wentz for backup Jalen Hurts. As I said earlier, Hurts was good! He threw for 109 yards, he threw one touchdown and one interception. The one touchdown he threw was a 34-yard pass to wide receiver Greg Ward Jr. in the back-right corner of the endzone. Now there was a quarterback controversy, again.

Pederson said after the game during his postgame press conference that he hadn’t decided on his starting QB for week 14 yet. He was asked the same question Monday after the game the same question, if he decided he would start. Pederson replied with the same message that he has not decided.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pederson made his decision that Jalen Hurts will be starting against the Saints. Wentz will be backing up for Hurts.
