Edmundo Sosa got the start in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series at third base in Atlanta, a make-or-break game for a Phillies team on the brink of elimination. A postseason elimination game and a man once acquired at the 2022 trade deadline as a bench bat in the starting lineup.
Unfortunately for Sosa, he did not get to experience the high of victory the same way the rest of the team did. During Sosa’s at-bat in the ninth inning, he hit a dribbler to the far side of shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. Sosa was not going to start the ninth inning of a tie game by recording an out; he raced down the first base line. He ended up being safe; however, once crossing the first base bag starting to grip his leg and limp, immediately signaling to the training staff that he was done.

Sosa was already dealing with a left groin injury that he suffered on the final day of the regular season. Postgame, he clarified the pain was a little lower on his leg than the groin injury, but still the inside of the left thigh.
“Yeah, I was trying not to elevate it too much so I didn’t aggravate it as much,” Sosa said via interpreter Diego A’niello. “Just to keep that feeling away and not to worsen it in that moment.”

Sosa said he plans to be ready for a decisive Game 3; however, if he is unavailable to at least start the game, the Phillies could either put Otto Kemp at third or move Bryce Harper to first, Alec Bohm to third, and bring in Bryan De La Cruz or Derek Hill into the outfield.
Sosa has been dealing with this injury since Sunday. It is apparent when he has limped around the bases. There is a risk of furthering the injury or even hurting his other leg from overcompensating. However, with Sosa on the brink of free agency, he is putting it all on the line for the Phillies.
“I did a lot of treatment [Wednesday], and we did a couple things that might help me be ready for [Thursday],” Sosa said. “Just hopeful, hopeful that I’ll be ready for [Thursday].”
