Kyle Schwarber’s Walk-Off Home Run Embodies Phillies’ Fight: ‘We Never Stop Fighting’

Down 4-0 with Cardinals’ closer Riley O’Brien on the mound and the Phillies ‘ eight-game winning streak on the line, things were looking grim. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the beating heart of the Phillies, J.T. Realmuto, stepped to the plate. With Bryce Harper on second base, he quickly got down 0-2 in the count, and he fought off several pitches, singling and moving Harper to third. Justin Crawford walked. Edmundo Sosa came to bat and got down to his last strike, and promptly unloaded the bases with a three-run double.
With the Phils down by a run and the remains of a 42,610 crowd at Citizens Bank Park on their feet, Bryan De La Cruz stepped up, got down to his last strike, fought until he got his pitch, didn’t try to do too much with it, and put the ball through the 5.5 hole, scoring Sosa.
Bringing Kyle Schwarber to the plate, and if not to kill the vibe and anticipation, he got down 0-2 and fought off a few pitches until he got a fastball up, and for the first time in more than three years, the Phillies win a game with a walk-off home run.
“That’s why you love baseball,” Schwarber said postgame. “Hopefully there were a lot of kids and families here today, and they can talk about it for a long time, how the Phillies were down to their final out then put up six runs and everybody goes home happy.”
While the Schwarbomb will get most of the attention, the real ignition point of this win for the Phils was that the bottom of the lineup did the real damage here. Crawford’s walk, Sosa’s double, and De La Cruz’s single fueled the inning and the comeback.
The thing that is the most impressive is that this team has been a different team since the trade deadline, when the acquisition of Luis Arraez fundamentally changed the shape of this team, which had struggled mightily in clutch situations. The Phillies have transformed into a team that is picking each other up and having the ultimate belief in each other.
“When I got to the plate, I kind of looked back at Harp,” Sosa said. “He just looked at me in a way that [said] you got this. And then I started looking at the rest of the guys at the dugout as well, and they had that same look, trusting me. If they can trust me with that look, why can’t I trust myself?”
This belief in one another has carried over and has been on full display since the Field of Dreams game. The roster was struggling before this and looked very lifeless against the Cardinals in St. Louis, but a little over a week later, this team looks like they are firing on all cylinders.
“That’s why you never quit,” Schwarber said. “Our guys are all prepared; it’s awesome to see how all of our guys prepare for a game each day. Whether in the lineup or not. Guys who are in the lineup, guys who are not in the lineup, they’re ready to go out there and compete their ass off.”
With this win, the Phillies have made a statement, and that statement is to never count this team out. This iteration of the 2026 Philadelphia Phillies is a true embodiment of the nickname ‘The Fightin’ Phils.’
Every team they’re chasing, and every team chasing them, should be nervous after this incredible stretch of baseball. If they can trust themselves with just one look, why can’t we trust them as well?
“We’re a winning team. We’re the Phillies,” Sosa said. “I can’t say I’m surprised. We never stop fighting.
“This was a magical day, a magical afternoon here.”
