The Phillies have a brand-new outfielder.

The Phillies have acquired center fielder Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for prospects Dylan Campbell and Jose Colmenares. Philadelphia will also acquire international bonus money from Chicago in the deal.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the news.

Hill, 30, has bounced around the league since being drafted by the Detroit Tigers back in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft by former Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski. The Phillies will be Hill’s seventh team he’s played for since making his debut back in 2020.

In his career, Hill has posted a .227 average with a .629 OPS. This season, in 50 games, Hill is batting .213 with a .659 OPS, but has good splits against lefties with a .272 average and a .780 OPS. Hill has played all three spots in the outfield this season and in his career, but has started 12 games in right field this year, the most of any position.

This move by the Phillies likely means that current starting right fielder Adolis Garcia is going to miss some type of time after suffering a shoulder injury during the Phillies’ finale against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night. Garcia suffered the injury after attempting to throw out a runner at home on a flyout.

No move or update has been given from the Phillies at this time, but the acquisition of right-handed hitting outfielder Hill just one day after Garcia suffered his injury likely means he will miss some length of time. This could mean a potential platoon role for Hill along with Phillies prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr, perhaps, who is still rehabbing a knee injury but is expected to join the Phillies at some point this season.

Along with Hill, the Phillies also acquired international bonus money from the White Sox, which is the second time in the last month the Phillies have made a trade to acquire more international money. They previously dealt minor-league reliever Andrew Baker to Colorado for international money to help with the signing of Chan-min Park.

Heading to the south side are Campbell and Colmenares, both 24 years old. Campbell was acquired by the Phillies back in January of 2025 from the Dodgers for international money. Colmenares was signed last August as a minor league free agent and has played for Jersey Shore since.
