The Phillies started a six-game road trip out on the West Coast with a 3-0 shutout win over the Padres on Memorial Day. After a rough homestretch where the Phillies went 2-4, they started a new series on the winning side of things. Their 7th shutout leads the entire National League.

During the homestand for the Phils, they struggled mightily on offense, and that continued for a good majority of Monday’s game. The Phillies only managed three hits all game, and two out of those three hits were home runs. Two of the three hits were from Kyle Schwarber, and the rest of the team went 1-for-25.

The starter for San Diego today was Griffin Canning, who, up to his start against the Phillies, was 0-4 with an ERA of 9, while also walking nearly six batters per nine innings. Despite his ugly stats, that did not contribute to his start. Despite giving up an early home run, he was keeping the Phillies scoreless and hitless. After the early bomb, he didn’t allow a hit until the 7th inning.

Meanwhile, the starter for the Phils was Jesus Luzardo, who has been fantastic in his last two starts. Despite getting into some trouble, he overcame it and pitched just what the Phillies needed: six scoreless innings while striking out six. The possibility that the Padres could’ve put the game away in multiple innings shows that Luzardo can battle out of jams and pitch effectively. The bullpen did its job backing up Luzardo with three scoreless innings.

The Phillies would immediately get off on the right note, with Schwarber hitting his 21st home run of the season in the first inning, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead two batters in.

Then the Padres made it scary for Luzardo and the Phils in the bottom half of the inning. Two singles and an error at shortstop loaded the bases for San Diego with nobody out. Luzardo, however, was able to get out of it with no runs given up, striking out the next two hitters he faced and getting former Phillie Nick Castellanos to ground out.

After a quiet 2nd inning for both sides, Luzardo would experience more trouble in the bottom of the third. After putting two runners on with nobody out, he induced a groundout, but with one out, still had runners on first and third. He was able to get Manny Machado to hit into a double play, ending the inning unscathed.

It would be another chance for the Padres to score in the fifth inning after a quiet 4th, as Luzardo hit and walked back-to-back Padres with one out. He would once again work out of it, getting a pop-out and a deep fly-out to end the inning. Through five innings, the Padres were 0-8 with runners in scoring position. Luzardo worked through one more clean inning, ending his night after six scoreless.

It took until the 7th inning for the Phillies to get their 2nd hit of the game, and it was Schwarber again, lining a single. Bryce Harper walked, putting two runners on, before Alec Bohm hit into a double play, with most people thinking the Phillies would go scoreless in yet another inning.

But up stepped Brandon Marsh, who hit his first home run since April 23. A line drive that got out in a hurry extended the Phillies’ lead to three and got Canning out of the game.

It would be up to the Phillies bullpen to close out the next three innings, as Orion Kerkering worked through an easy 7th inning, striking out two. Then it was up to Brad Keller, who worked his way through a scoreless 8th even with a runner on third.

Then it was time for Jhoan Duran to come on, and he pitched a scoreless 9th inning, giving the Phillies the 3-0 win, and notching his 100th career save. It’s also the first win for the Phillies on Memorial Day since 2014.

The Phillies will look to win the series on Tuesday night, with Aaron Nola scheduled to start at 9:40 p.m.
