Maybe the rest was needed for Alec Bohm.

The 2026 season has been a disaster for the Phillies third baseman, and that’s honestly putting it nicely. Coming into Saturday night’s game, Bohm was batting .159 on the season, with one home run and 15 RBIs, with a .439 OPS, .206 Slug, and .227 OBP. All three of those averages were either the worst or second-worst in all of baseball.

He’s been flat-out terrible and essentially unplayable when you factor in the fact that his defense isn’t the greatest in the world as well. So interim manager Don Mattingly made a decision to bench Bohm for not one but two straight games, not even giving him an at-bat in either.

After missing two games and with a left-hander, Kyle Freeland, on the mound, Bohm was back, hopefully ready to get back to his old All-Star ways. If Saturday night’s 9-3 win was the start of a new season for Bohm, then he’s on a good track. Bohm smacked not one but two solo bombs, tripling his home run total on the season. On top of that, he smoked a two-run double late in the game, for a four-RBI night for the third baseman.

On top of that, Kyle Schwarber continued to do Kyle Schwarber things, smashing a three-run homer, while Aaron Nola wasn’t a huge liability on the mound for the second game in a row.

Despite Edouard Julien leading off the game with a single, Nola worked around it thanks to a groundout, popout, and a nine-pitch strikeout from TJ Rumfield. In the bottom half of the inning, Trea Turner matched Julien with a lead-off single, and like the 2-4 hitters for the Rockies, the Phillies were unable to bring him in.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, Felix Reyes pinch-hit for Bryce Harper in the first inning, with the Phillies stating that Harper had a migraine.

While the first inning went well for Nola, inning two didn’t as Nola allowed his signature early solo home run, this one being a bomb to right by Willi Castro, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead. Both teams went down in order in their next innings, but in the top of the third inning, Elmo made a special appearance in the Phillies’ booth, asking to see some home runs from the Phillies.

Well, Elmo asked for home runs, and the Phillies provided with Alec Bohm, who was back in the lineup after two days off, smoking a ball to left field to tie the game at one. The hits kept coming as Bryston Stott blooped a single to center and Turner smacked one there as well for his second straight base hit. It was then capped off with a three-run bomb off the bat of Schwarber, giving the Phillies a 4-1 lead.

The runs didn’t stop there for Philadelphia as Adolis Garcia smacked a double right and crossed home one batter later on an RBI-single by Edmundo Sosa for a five-run third inning.

Nola ran into trouble in the top of the fourth after allowing a single to Troy Johnson and walking Jake McCarthy, putting two runners on, and left a fastball down the middle to Kyle Karros, who smoked a double to left center, making it 5-3 Phillies.

Thankfully for Nola, he got some insurance in the bottom half of the innings from Bohm, who again lifted a ball just over the left field fence for another solo shot.

Unfortunately for Nola, he couldn’t make it out of the fifth inning after allowing another single and a walk, but Tim Mayza was able to pick him up to close out the inning. Brandon Marsh added a run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a sac fly, but following that run, the offense went quiet for both teams.

That was until it was woken up once again, but who else but Alec Bohm? Following singles from Marsh and J.T. Relamuto, Bohm smoked a double down the left field line for two more RBIs, making it a four RBI, two home run, three extra-base hit game for Bohm, making it by far his best game of the season.

Orion Kerkering was called on to grab the last three outs, and he made it easy for the Phillies. A lineout from McCarthy, a groundout from Karros, and a dropped third strike strikeout from Brett Sullivan finished off the night with the Phillies picking up the 9-3 win.
