Despite the Loss, Alex Bump Provided Life in Playoff Debut: ‘I Love It’

To state the obvious, the Philadelphia Flyers have not played their best hockey after Game 5’s 3-2 loss, sending the series back to Philadelphia for Game 6. Though they aren’t quite in panic mode, the Flyers get closer and closer to absolute worry, but Flyers forward Alex Bump gave them a sense of hope during a disappointing and frustrating game.
Bump, who had not played a single game in this series, replaced the scratched Matvei Michkov, who was pointless in four games. With a 2-0 Pittsburgh lead, it would be the rookie Bump who would put out the fire and tally his first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal, cutting the Penguins’ lead in half at 2-1 after a beautiful move on Artus Silovs.

This goal provided the Flyers with some momentum throughout the period that eventually turned into enough for the Flyers to tie the game off the stick of Travis Sanheim. Bump may have celebrated because it was his first career playoff goal, but his body language and excitement also told the rest of the Flyers that they’re right in it, no matter what.
In his NHL debut on March 7, Bump not only played in Pittsburgh inside of PPG Paints Arena, but also tied the game on his first career NHL goal. The Flyers would go on to win that game in a shootout. It was that night, against the Penguins, that the Flyers knew Bump had talent. Bump would finish the season with five goals and four assists for nine points, and a rating of +3.
During Game 5, shots from the Flyers continued to go wide and miss the target, resulting in only 20 shots for the Flyers. Without Bump in the lineup, a tired group of Flyers could have missed the spark that Bump gave with his goal, and could have made this game a lot worse than it turned out to be. Getting fresh skates in the lineup is huge on its own, but when it comes with a consistent wrist shot, it’s a no-brainer that he belongs in the lineup, and Bump did not disappoint tonight.
“He’s really improved from the beginning of the year,” Rick Tocchet said after the game. “He’s got a stop-and-start game as much as he’s got the creativity, the shot, and he’s coming up with loose pucks. We got to get some other guys to play that way. Sto- and-start hockey.”

While the attention was that he was a rookie coming into the lineup in Game 5, Bump claims to be relaxed and prepared for these moments.
“I’ve played in these kinds of games before … doesn’t intimidate me at all,” Bump said postgame regarding the atmosphere and his situation as a rookie. “I love it.”
Bump was built for these atmospheres, and despite him not playing in the first four games of the series, it’s good to see him out there regardless.
This series between the Penguins and Flyers is unfortunately going back to Philadelphia after the Flyers took a 3-0 lead, but if Bump stays in the lineup, the Philadelphia fans will welcome him and his outstanding game back to the Xfinity Mobile Arena in hopes of putting away the Penguins after two straight losses.
After a hapless bounce of the stanchions into the net off Daniel Vladar, the Penguins would regain the lead, but no one knows if the momentum would have continued after that. Bump showed why he belongs in the playoffs, and the Flyers move a lot better with him in the rotation.
It’s a shame that this series extends to a Game 6, but the Flyers leave with a positive in Bump.
