Sale Dices Up Listless Phillies Offense in Another Embarrassing Loss

The Phillies wasted a solid outing from Cristopher Sanchez, managing just five hits in a 3-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Against Chris Sale and the Braves’ bullpen, the offense never found an answer, and the Phils dropped to four games under .500.
The Phillies limped into Saturday night’s divisional clash against the Braves, sitting three games under .500 for the first time since the turbulent start of the 2023 season. The pitching staff remains very inconsistent, and the bats continue to completely miss in clutch moments, which is still an agonizing trend of failing to cash in with runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the second inning, Felix Reyes took Sale deep for a home run in his first career at-bat. In the top of the third, in a play that should have ended the inning, Edmundo Sosa misplayed a ball, which resulted in the Braves loading the bases instead of getting out of the inning. The Braves scored three unearned runs to take a 3-1 lead. Sale and the Braves bullpen held the Phils at bay, handing them the 3-1 loss.
Phillies Defense Causes Big Inning For Braves
The Phillies’ defense remains a glaring liability and provided yet another frustrating example of how quickly mistakes can snowball. With Sanchez on the mound trying to navigate a potent Braves lineup, a routine sequence quickly turned into a disaster. Sosa had a chance to end the inning, but his misplay extended it, and Atlanta turned it into three unearned runs, forcing Sanchez to get extra outs.

While all three runs were unearned, the defensive lapse forced Sanchez into high-stress, high-leverage situations he never should have had to face. Sanchez, who entered the contest as one of the few bright spots for the rotation with his 2.01 ERA and 31 strikeouts across 22.1 innings, had to continuously dance in and out of trouble following the error. It is incredibly difficult to silence an elite divisional rival when a pitching staff is forced to secure four or five outs in a single inning, and that lack of fundamental run prevention completely altered the complexion of the game.
Phillies Bats Stifled by Sale
The numbers tell the story. The Phillies are now 2-7 at home against left-handed starters, with multiple regulars posting an OPS under .415, and against Sale, there was little resistance beyond a solo shot.
The only other fleeting signs of life came from Alec Bohm, who secured a much-needed base hit to temporarily ease the brutal slump he is in, came in batting .136, and a solitary knock from Sosa. Beyond those isolated moments, the lineup was completely overmatched by Sale’s execution.

To call it like it is, the Phils’ offense is completely listless right now. Their approach at the plate has devolved into awful pitch selection and a glaring inability to adjust to top-line pitching. Critics are increasingly pointing fingers directly at the coaching staff as opposing starters continue to easily dice up the lineup. The team’s struggles against elite left-handed pitching are becoming a legitimate cause for concern. The Phils entered the contest a dismal 2-7 against southpaws at home this season, with several everyday regulars carrying an OPS below.415 against them. This failure, combined with a complete lack of situational awareness with runners on base, has the Phillies’ offensive identity in complete disarray.
Realmuto Leaves the Game in the Sixth With Back Tightness
J.T. Realmuto was forced to exit Saturday night’s contest in the sixth inning with reported back tightness. Beyond his offensive production, Realmuto’s ability to call games and manage the pitching staff remains unmatched across the major leagues. Losing a player who has caught more innings than anyone else in baseball since 2019 is a devastating blow for a team already desperately searching for answers.
If Realmuto’s back issue requires an extended stint on the injured list, the Phillies face a massive issue not only with his defense and the way he handles the pitching staff, but he’s also been the most consistent hitter on the team. While Rafael Marchan possesses defensive upside, he can’t completely replicate Realmuto’s presence in the middle of the lineup. With the team already struggling to score runs, losing their most consistent offensive threat and defensive anchor could completely derail their upcoming road trip and push them further down the National League East standings.
Sunday afternoon, the Phillies will send out Andrew Painter to face Grant Holmes, to try to avoid an early-season sweep at home.
