At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, John Middleton announced in a press conference down in Clearwater, Florida, that Chase Utley would be inducted as the 51st member of the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame.
Utley retired as the greatest second baseman in Philadelphia Phillies history. A former 1st-round selection in the 2000 draft, he spent 13 seasons in the red pinstripes where he slashed .282/.366/.481 while mixing in top tier defense throughout his prime, 6 All-Star team appearances, and 4 Silver Slugger awards.

Utley was a key contributor during the Phillies’ beloved 2007-2011 core, in which he helped lead the team to 5 straight National League East division titles, 2 National League pennants, and a World Series championship in 2008. It was a World Series in which Utley contributed majorly, scoring the 1st run of the series with a homer in Game 1 wich the Phillies would go on to win, an iconic defensive play in Game 5 where Utely fielded an Akinori Iwamura grounder on the run towards 2nd, pump faked a throw to first, and then fired home to gundown the Tampa Bay runner trying to score, ending a crucial 7th inning in what would be the series clinching game. Utley then made his mark again during the parade, when all players got a chance to speak to the crowd gathered in Citizens Bank Park, Utley exclaimed to the world that the Phillies were “world f***ing champions.”
Utley followed a triumphant 2008 World Series with one of the best hitting performances in World Series history, no doubt the best for a 2nd baseman, during the 2009 Fall Classic. He homered 5 times throughout the 6-game series against the Yankees, a number that tied Reggie Jackson for the most amount of home runs in a single World Series, and crowned Utley as the Home Run King for 2nd baseman’s in World Series play with 7 homers in his career.

Utley joins an illustrious list of Phillies legends, including his middle infield counterpart Jimmy Rollins, whose Wall of Fame placard Utley revealed in August last year. A player who ranks top-10 in several franchise records, is nearing a potential Hall of Fame induction, and gets a sweet reward for his legendary time in Philly as he becomes this year’s inductee into the Phillies Wall of Fame.
The induction will take place before the Phillies’ series opener with the Blue Jays on Friday, August 7.
This may not be the only plaque that is unveiled for Utley over the next few years. In his third year of eligibility, he received 59.1% of the votes for the Hall of Fame, a significant increase from 39.8% in 2025 and 28.8% in 2024. While falling short of the 75% requirement, his rising percentage indicates momentum for a potential future election induction into Cooperstown in a year or two.
