If there’s one thing that is secure for the future of the Phillies, it is the starting pitching staff.

Over the past 70 years of Phillies baseball, one thing has remained true throughout their time in the MLB. They have always dominated through their starting pitching

Whether it’s Robin Roberts, Steve Carlton, Jim Bunning, Curt Schilling, Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, or Roy Halladay, the Phillies have had many of the league’s top starting pitchers over the last number of decades, producing Hall of Famer after Hall of Famer. That identity has stayed true to this day, especially this decade, where the starting pitching has been called the best in the league for the last number of years.

It started with Aaron Nola, who was one of the few top prospects from the 2010’s to actually make an impact at the major league level. After finding his footing, the team eventually made one of the best free agent acquisitions in its franchise’s history, signing Zack Wheeler away from the New York Mets.

Wheeler and Nola were the one-two punch the team has been searching for years, and using the two of them, along with young stud Ranger Suarez, the Phillies rode their pitching to a World Series, two NLCS, two division titles, and four consecutive playoff appearances.

Unfortunately for the Phillies, the good old days can’t last forever. Players wear down, get older, and some players leave for opportunities that the Phillies can’t offer, and right now in 2026, that’s exactly the spot the Phillies are in.

Wheeler has said that he is very unlikely to play past his current contract, which in that case gives him two seasons left in the majors, and Nola is heading into year three of a seven-year deal in which he has struggled to repeat the success of his first eight seasons in the league. Nola turns 33 this season.

As for Suarez, he took the other option, taking a payday that he rightfully deserved, leaving for Boston this past offseason. So if their past one-two punch is aging out and one of their top former young guys has left, what does the future hold?

Well, it turns to the shoulders of one of the game’s current top arms in Cristopher Sanchez. Sanchez was a former international signing of the Phillies, and with the help of the Phillies pitching staff, turned him into a Cy Young caliber player for years to come.

Then you have the MLB draft, where, back in 2021, were able to find one of the games top rated pithcing prospcests in Andrew Painter. Painter has made his way through the minor league system, impressing many and getting all the way up to the top 20 prospects rankings in all of baseball. Painter is expected to make his major league debut this season and is ready to make his presence known across the entire MLB.

And finally theres the man that they traded for that rounds out the trio of Sanchez and Painter, and that’s the new rich man in Jesus Luzardo. Luzardo agreed to a 5-year, $135 million contract extension with the Phillies, keeping him in Philadelphia through 2031.

Luzardo was acquired back in December of 2024 and instantly made an impact for the Phillies in his first season with the team. He pitched so well that the Phillies opted not to let him hit free agency next winter and re-sign him now and make him a part of their future. He rounds out a new trio of pitchers who are all 29 and younger, setting themselves up to dominate lineups for years to come.

This three-headed monster is going to be the next trio for this Phillies team over the next half-decade. Sanchez is only signed for the next couple of years, but the Phillies will likely change those plans and could make him one of the highest-paid pitchers in baseball sometime in the next few seasons.

Rolling into the postseason with a trio of Sanchez, Painter, and Luzardo is a cheat code for this team. Until the wheels fall off for Wheeler and Nola loses his stuff, this starting rotation is still prepared to run this team with their dominance.

People can talk all they want about the Schwarbombs from Kyle Schwaber, and bullets off the bats of Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. Offense and home runs are fun and all, it’s the flashy things that make highlight videos. However, championships are won on the backs of dominant pitching and especially from dominant starting pitching.

The Phillies have had the identity of dominating on the mound over the course of their existence, and they’re not going to stop any time soon. This group will continue to be one of baseball’s best, far beyond the ticking time clock of their aging veterans. Dave Dombrowski and co. have set the Phillies up to continue to succeed.
