Sean Couturier at his Lowest, Where Does he Go from Here?

Following the Philadelphia Flyers’ loss to the New York Rangers on home ice, the Flyers have lost six straight games, and five straight in regulation. With this new feeling for the Flyers, as this is the longest losing streak of the season, veteran leaders need to step up, whether by playmaking and scoring goals or making their presence known. Regarding veterans helping out, your captain needs to be able to cash in or drop the gloves to boost the locker room and be there for your squad, as that is the general job of an NHL-caliber captain.
The Flyers captain, Sean Couturier, however, has not lived up to these standards, and rarely has throughout his two years as the cap. In these six losses, Couturier has only one point and has not brought any energy through hits or fights. He, and some other leaders, have lacked the spirit and energy of fighting so much that 21-year-old sophomore Matvei Michkov had to step up and be the guy to stand up for rookie Denver Barkey, who was decked by a Pittsburgh Penguin.
Even though it was late in the game, and the Flyers were not going to come back and tie the game, Michkov was able to give the Flyers something to look at and appreciate. During a rough time for the Flyers, he gave the team a spark of energy and hope to bring into the locker room and on. Adding onto that, Michkov, after getting a feed from Barkey, who had been down, scored a goal from the right wing, adding even more energy to the Flyers regardless of the score. Though it is really important to have all sorts of players stick up for the guys they play with, your captain needs to take care of the business as well, which Couturier hasn’t done much of.

Not only does this struggle for Couturier span the last six games, but it has been going on for a lot of the season. He has gone 20 straight games without a goal. The last goal he scored was a deflection against the Colorado Avalanche. Since then, Couturier has been -5, with eight assists. While eight assists in 20 games isn’t generally bad, it would have been beneficial to have another statistic help out the assists.
Couturier, after yesterday’s game, tried to encourage the room during a postgame interview that, in a way, bashes his own teammates who have outperformed Couturier himself. “We suck,” he said. “Plain and simple.”

While he wants to take accountability for his team and acknowledge the stress of the skid the Flyers seem to be on, these words do not help. As the captain, building up always helps more than bringing down, and the interview would have gone much better if he expanded on why they “suck” and how they break free. Stress and frustration are understandable, but his teammates may not appreciate how Couturier presented the team to the media.
With the season only getting older, and time beginning to run out before you know it, the Flyers and Sean Couturier need to decide what is going to happen. They need to decide if the C is the right patch for him. They will also need to communicate on what is best to give Couturier the best chance at returning to the Coots he once was, as with his contract, he will more than likely be a Flyer through the 2029-30 season. Even though it is not impossible for Couturier to be himself again, he is running out of time and needs to act fast. Not only does he benefit from his success, but his team does as well.
