For the fourth offseason in a row, the Philadelphia Eagles will be the market for a new offensive coordinator.

The Eagles’ offense was by and away the biggest talking point all season long, and not for any good reason. Following the loss of former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, the Eagles decided to stay in-house to hire their next play caller, promoting pass game coordinator and associate head coach Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator.

They had previously decided to hire their offensive coordinator in-house back in 2023, after losing Shane Steichen to the Colts, and promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to the position. Johnson was historically bad during his first year with the Eagles, leading the team to a late-season collapse and a first-round playoff loss. Johnson was fired just days after the season ended.

History repeated itself this year, as days after the Eagles first round playoff loss, the team relieved Patullo of his duties. Now, for the fifth year in a row, the Eagles will have a new play caller. Here are a few directions the Eagles could go:

The Former Head Coaches: Mike McDaniel, Brian Daboll, Mike McCarthy

This offseason in the NFL has been mayhem when it comes to teams finding new leaders for their teams. So far, nine teams have fired their head coaches this year, tying a record for the most ever in a single cycle. Due to the firings, multiple offensive-minded coaches have become available for the Eagles to sign to fill their coordinator opening.

One of the top names on the market for many teams’ OC openings is former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. McDaniel was basically hired by Miami for his offensive prowess, but unfortunate play from his quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, caused his downfall in Miami. McDaniel, as a play caller and a game planner, is one of the best in the NFL and is rightfully being touted as the best option for teams. He’d be a home run hire for the Eagles.

Another former coach option for the Eagles, one that feels more likely, is former Giants head coach Brian Daboll. Daboll was credited with turning Josh Allen into the star he is today. He went to New York hoping to turn Daniel Jones into that, but despite some success, never could get consistent play from his quarterbacks. Daboll has ties to the Eagles, more specifically Jalen Hurts, as Daboll was Hurts’ offensive coordinator when he was at Alabama. Daboll is trying to prove that he can still be a top offensive mind in the league, and with the ties to Hurts, he seems to be a favorite for a job.

Finally, there’s former Packers and Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. While it’s unlikely he takes a coordinator job, McCarthy is trying to make his way back to a head coach, and what better way to get there than to get the Eagles offense back on track.

The Familiar Candidates: Frank Reich and Parks Frazier

You then have the option for Nick Sirianni to hire people that he and the Eagles are familiar with. The number one name out there is former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Reich was the Colts’ former head coach, and during his time in Indianapolis, his offensive coordinator was Sirianni. Sirianni and Reich are still great friends; bringing in his former boss would be an easy transition for Sirianni.

While it’s very unlikely to happen, the Eagles could promote another coach from within to call plays next year, and the leading candidate for that decision is passing game coordinator Parks Frazier. Frazier, another member of Reich’s Colts staff back in the early 2020s, has called plays before, doing so during the second half of the 2022 season after Reich was fired. At 34, he’d be a big gamble and not a sure thing for an Eagles team that needs to hit a home run, but still an option who could turn into a fantastic option if given the chance.

The First Time Offensive Coordinators: Nate Scheelhaase, Davis Webb, Jerrod Johnson

The Eagles will likely go after someone who has experience being an OC and being a play caller for another team. They could try a gamble at hiring an up-and-coming coach who is ready to take that leap.

One of the biggest names that has been thrown around in the cycle of getting an OC job is Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase. Scheelhaase has quickly risen through the ranks at the college level, eventually getting plucked onto Sean McVay’s staff in Los Angeles. At just 35 years old, Scheelhaase seems ready to take the next step, and if McVay doesn’t give him that chance, someone will. Another tie with Scheelhaase is that he coached at Iowa State for five seasons, working under former Cyclone head coach Matt Campbell, who is a good friend and a former college teammate of Sirianni at Mount Union.

Two other youngsters on the rise are quarterback coaches for the Broncos, Davis Webb, and for the Texans, Jerrod Johnson. Webb has only been a coach for three seasons now, but has excelled in his time in Denver, helping turn Bo Nix into a pro quarterback. He’d be a true gamble as he’s never called plays, but the insight in the game is there.

As for Johnson, he’s been with Houston for the past three seasons after working around the league in various roles for the Vikings, Colts, and 49ers. Johnson has worked with C.J. Stroud since landing in Houston and has done an ok job. Johnson spent time with the Eagles way back in the 2011 training camp.

Been There Done That: Todd Monken, Zac Robinson, Mike Kafka, Kliff Kingsbury

Finally, we have the coaches and former offensive coordinators, looking for their next shot.

One of the big names out there in the former OC department is former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Monken has been everywhere in the world of football and has called plays for multiple teams. In his most recent job for the Ravens, Monken helped lead the Ravens to the sixth-ranked offense in 2023 and the first-ranked in 2024. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson won the MVP award in 2023 and finished second in 2024.

At 59 years old, it feels like Monkon could be the offensive version of Vic Fangio, a top coordinator who doesn’t have real aspirations to leave for a head coaching job. As long as he gets the job done, Monkon could be someone who sticks around for the remainder of this core run with the Eagles’ offensive weapons.

Another former coordinator is the former Commander OC Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury was surprisingly let go after two years in Washington, after turning Jayden Daniels into the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024. A previous head coach of the Cardinals, Kingsbury is likely trying to get back to that spot and could be a potential one-and-done for the Eagles if he finds success. However, if he sticks around, he’d be similar to McDaniel in a home run hire for Philadelphia as his offensive mindset could reinvent an Eagles offense that desperately needs it.

While the Eagles could sign a guy like Daboll, they could also sign his former OC, Mike Kafka. Kafka, a former Eagles draft pick, got his start in Kansas City under Andy Reid before leaving KC for NYC to help Daboll and the Giants. At 38, he’d be an interesting hire, but if given actual offensive weapons, could succeed.

Finally, another name being thrown around is the Falcons’ former offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. Robinson is out of a job after Raheem Morris was fired after just two years in Atlanta. Robinson was formerly under the McVay coaching tree before leaving LA when Morris took the Falcons job. He worked as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach during his time with the Rams.
