In a game where Philadelphia fans couldn’t deal with another heartbreaking loss, Tyrese Maxey‘s attempt to take over Scotiabank Arena in Toronto was all for naught, and the Raptors beat the Sixers 116-115 in overtime. This loss erases Philadelphia’s chances of extending its two-game win streak.
Toronto improves to 24-16 on the season and is the 4 seed in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia, which looked to chip away and gain ground on the Raptors’ spot, drops to 21-16 this season and stays the 5 seed in the East.
The game started out slowly, with just 47 total points being scored in the first quarter. With Joel Embiid and Paul George out, the Sixers seemed to be unable to get into a groove and were sloppy. An inability to knock down shots was obvious, and Adem Bona had an Angel Reese-esque performance, missing his layups and rebounding his misses, then missing them again.
Toronto’s second quarter caught Philadelphia off guard. The Raptors dropped 36 points in the period, and similarly to the Eagles, the Sixers’ offense was unable to get points on the board effectively. The team scored just 23, allowing the Raptors to have a double-digit lead at the half.

The second half was a different story, however. Philly came out on fire, offensively and defensively. The team worked more as a collective than they did in the first half, moving the ball around the perimeter and driving to the rim with emphasis, while also finding the open man outside. On the defensive side of the ball, Philly’s off-ball defensive positioning kept the Raptors on their toes, not giving them any chances to penetrate. Philadelphia outscored Toronto 36-18 in the second and held a 8 point lead going into the final period.
Philadelphia’s fourth quarter was a rollercoaster of emotions. Toronto came out of the gate hot and began attacking the Sixers from all different angles. Philly’s 8-point lead was erased quick and the Raptors tested the Sixers throughout the quarter. Lead changes and scoring on one end, then the other, was the story of the quarter, and Philly did all they could to stay in it. With 1:09 remaining, Maxey hit a tough shot to give Philly a 102-101 lead, which was responded to with the Raptors taking the lead right back. Maxey then came back on the other end and finished a tough layup. A Scottie Barnes travel was costly when the Raptors got the ball back, and Maxey took advantage of the miscue with a three-pointer with 20 seconds left.

What should’ve been the end of the game and a Sixers victory at the end of the fourth ended with an Immanuel Quickley deep two-point jumper, VJ Edgecombe turnover, then another Quickley bucket to send the game to overtime tied at 107. The Raptors then went into the overtime period, starting on a 7-4 run, which the Sixers could not recover from. Philly was able to tie it up at 115 with little time remaining after a ridiculous Edgecome three-pointer just in front of the logo, and while Barnes drove inside with about a second remaining, Kelly Oubre Jr. fouled him. Barnes went to the line, made his first free-throw, then missed the second intentionally, allowing the Raptors to bat it away, which made time expire.
Maxey finished with 38 points, which was the most points for any player in the game, and Collin Murray-Boyles led the game with an impressive 15 rebounds, 8 offensive, and 7 defensive. The assist leader was Barnes, who dropped in 8 to go along with his 31-point performance.
A hard day for Philadelphia fans continued with this loss, but luckily for the fans, the 76ers will get a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow night, when they play the Raptors again at 7:30 PM.
