After a disappointing, yet hard-fought battle in Sunday’s loss against the Colorado Avalanche, the Philadelphia Flyers looked to get back on track as they continue their home stand of six games. They certainly bounced back, as they took control of the sneaky San Jose Sharks, who are currently tied for the last wild card spot in the Western Conference after tonight.
Though San Jose lacks depth, they can beat up a team with their front line, as 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini, second in the NHL in points, and his accompaniment in Will Smith have been off the charts for San Jose during what could be seen as a rebuild for the Sharks.
Though the Sharks got on the board first, the Flyers made the night about them, with their multiple feats throughout the night, resulting in the 4-1 Flyers win. With the effort of the offense, defense, and goaltending, the Flyers played another impressive game tonight in South Philadelphia.
Konecny Earns 500th NHL Point
Tonight was a very special night for the Flyers, not just because of Matvei Michkov‘s 21st birthday, but because of an impressive accomplishment for one of Philadelphia’s core pieces.
Travis Konecny, whom the Flyers drafted in 2015, has been a staple of this organization for almost ten years now, going through both the highs and the lows of recent Flyers history. With all he has done for the Flyers in his time, it was about time that tonight he would collect his 500th National Hockey League point, with an assist late in the first period on a beautiful goal from Christian Dvorak.

The 28-year-old, now in his tenth season with the Flyers, has 206 career goals and 295 assists, as Konecny rounded his night off with both a goal and an assist. After tonight, he holds eight goals and 17 assists on the year, good for 25 points through 28 games.
If he continues to play like he played tonight, he could very possibly end the season with over 70 points once again. Though TK started the season out slow, he has certainly found himself once again, and it showed tonight.
Emotional Night for Ty Murchison
With the morale and vibes of the Flyers high tonight, it continued with the NHL debut of Flyers’ defenseman Ty Murchison, who could not control himself not only during interviews, but on the ice with his new teammates.
Murchison, who the Flyers had selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, had played his college hockey with Arizona State University for his four years before earning a spot with the Flyers’ farm system in the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. During those 25 games with the Phantoms, Murchison put up two goals and four assists while being at a +9 for two seasons. Another positive to that is his 36 penalty minutes, showing his perfect fit for the Flyers organization.
Tonight, Murchison played around 15 minutes, one minute of that being shorthanded. In his frame, he had a blocked shot and three hits on the night, showing that his physicality, without a doubt, transferred over to the professional level. With the opportunities he got tonight, Murchison had an outstanding game, one the Flyers should be impressed with.
Grunstrom Picks up First Goal as a Flyer for the Lead
With tonight’s theme of emotion and morals, Flyers’ forward and former Shark Carl Grunstrom got his first tally in orange, and gave the Flyers’ fourth line their first goal of the season.
Though Nicolas Deslauriers and Garnet Hathaway both have zero points on the year, Rick Tocchet had not given up any hope on the fourth line and stood up for the guys before the game. Whatever Tocchet was feeling about his fourth line, the former Shark bites back at his old team, as Grunstrom gets on the board with a tip from Nick Seeler.
This goal definitely means a lot to both the line and Grunstrom himself, as the Flyers hope that he can be a playmaker on the fourth line.

Cates Stretches the Lead, Vladar Holds it as the Flyers Get Win No. 16
With a lead heading into the second intermission, the Flyers had to seem pretty happy with their two unanswered goals. All seemed happy, except for Noah Cates, who cashed in for the Flyers with 10 seconds remaining in the second period. His seventh goal of the season came in clutch, as he sent the Flyers into the locker room up by a pair of goals, rather than the equalizer being a shot away for San Jose. This goal gave Cates the third star in tonight’s game.
Even though the Flyers scored three goals into a tended net, it was once again Daniel Vladar coming up huge, saving 17 straight after letting in the first shot on goal. His .944 save percentage earned him tonight’s first star.
With tonight being Michkov’s birthday, Konecny’s 500th point being scored, Grunstrom’s first goal scored as a Flyer, and Murchison’s impressive NHL debut, the Flyers locker room is certainly at a high. It’s safe to say the Flyers don’t need an inflatable bunny to give the team energy.
