Cam Skattebo was having an all-time rookie season.
The 23-year-old who was selected 105th overall in this year’s draft by the Giants had limited carries through the first three weeks, before exploding into stardom in Week 4 when Jaxson Dart became New York’s starting quarterback.
It was a rookie takeover. The two immediately became a duo, and Skattebo took off. From Weeks 4-7 against the Chargers, Saints, Eagles, and Broncos, Skattebo recorded 296 rushing yards on 75 attempts. His best game came on Thursday Night Football against the Eagles in Week 6, where he rushed 19 times for 98 yards and three touchdowns. He also notched 102 receiving yards over those four games.
In eight games this season, Skattebo rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and added 24 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, however, Skattebo suffered a tormenting ankle injury. He suffered a dislocated ankle halfway through the second quarter. As soon as the play commenced, it was gruesome. As he was carted off, the sold-out crowd of 69,879 in Philadelphia gave the rookie a standing ovation.
Skattebo underwent successful surgery on his dislocated ankle Sunday night at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Presbyterian campus. He was discharged on Monday, but not before receiving a special visit by the Eagles’ do-it-all Chief of Security, Dom DiSandro.
Big Dom dropped off pizza and cheesesteaks for the rookie on Monday, which is pretty awesome and a display of why Philadelphia has its title of The City of Brotherly Love.
What a legend, and what a classy move by Big Dom and the Eagles organization.
Contrary to popular belief, there are good people in Philadelphia.
Skattebo was discharged from the hospital on Monday and “will begin rehab immediately,” per the Giants.
It has been a rollercoaster of a season for New York. They started out with expectations as low as the Dead Sea, and when Dart came into the starting role, there was a total flip into excitement surrounding the Giants. This has come with two injuries to their two best offensive weapons: Malik Nabers‘ ACL and now Skattebo’s ankle.
It has been a brutal year for a young team that has some juice.
