The Flyers lost their second home game of the season against the Winnipeg Jets 5-2.
Despite the fact that the Jets are one of the best teams in the league, the Flyers limited them to only 14 shots on goal, but it wasn’t enough. The Flyers couldn’t generate enough offense of their own; they finished the game with only 17 shots on goal.
Let’s recap the game.
First period
The first period was uneventful — only 3 shots for the Flyers and 5 for the Jets. However, the Jets did find the back of the net during the first 20 minutes.
Vladislav Namestnikov scored first, assisted by Nino Niederreiter and Gustav Nyquist with 14:15 left in the opening frame. After a couple of saves from Samuel Ersson on Niederreiter, Namestnikov took the rebound to give the Jets a 1-0 lead.
Second period
After a slow start for the Flyers, mainly on the offensive side of the game, they generated more offense in the second period. The shots were 12-5 in favor of the Flyers during this period.
In their first power play of the game (and the first penalty of the game), they couldn’t score but had some huge chances. In the first one, Travis Konecny had a huge chance with a pretty much wide-open net, but Connor Hellebuyck made a save. It was a good save from him, but it’s more of a “miss shot” by Konecny. During the same power play, Tyson Foerster made a nice shot and beat Hellebuyck, but he hit the post.
Even if the Flyers had the momentum during the second period with all those chances, the Jets took a 2-0 lead. A shot from Mark Scheifele, assisted by Gabriel Vilardi, beat Ersson. It is surely a shot that Ersson would like to have back. That goal happened on just the second shot of the period for the Jets with 12:59 left.
In the second power play, the Flyers had more chances — a nice passing play from Matvei Michkov and Sean Couturier, but Konecny couldn’t finish it.
The Flyers, after all those chances in the middle frame, scored their first goal of the game. Owen Tippett beat Hellebuyck with a perfect bar-down shot with 3:38 left in the second period. He decided to shoot and made the right call on a two-on-one with Christian Dvorak. The goal was assisted by Trevor Zegras and Travis Sanheim.
Morgan Barron gave back the two-goal lead for the Jets with 2:17 left in the period. That goal was assisted by Kyle Connor. A lucky and weird goal for the Jets. A shot from Barron deflected off Noah Juulsen and Noah Cates before entering the net.
Third period
The third period was similar to the first one in terms of scoring chances. Only 8 total shots in that period and 2 for the Flyers. On their first power play of the game, Scheifele scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Connor and Alex Laffalo. The goal was scored with 10:20 left in the period and put the game out of hands for the Flyers.
On a positive note, Michkov, assisted by Juulsen and Couturier, beat Hellebuyck in the final minutes of the game and scored his first goal of the season. That goal gave some hope for the Flyers to pull the goalie, but Tanner Pearson scored in an empty net to make it 5-2.
The next game for the Flyers will be Saturday, October 18, at the Xfinity Mobile Arena against the Minnesota Wild at 7 pm ET. The Flyers will try to win their second game of the season.
