Flyers Hand Defending Champions 1st Loss of Season in Home Opener

The Philadelphia Flyers have finally given the city of Philadelphia a victory, and a beautiful victory at that.
The Flyers welcomed in the two-time defending champs in the Florida Panthers, who they led the season off against in Sunrise, Florida, where the Panthers won the 2-1 victory. The tables turned in the rematch, however, as the Flyers made a positive impression on the fans with a 5-2 win over Florida.
There were many standout moments from players like Sean Couturier, Trevor Zegras, and Daniel Vladar, who all came together to get the job done. The game flowed smoothly and was ugly throughout the first 60 minutes tonight, but however they got it done, the Flyers came out with a hard-earned first win.
The Captain Steals the Show
One of the biggest questions coming into this year was the position and ability of Flyers’ center and captain Couturier, who has seen a massive decline over the last three years as a result of a couple of back injuries and procedures. Before the season started, Couturier made an exclamation on the fact that he expects to be himself this year, and that he wants to prove everyone otherwise. Tonight was the perfect example of that.
Apart from his physicality returning and his sense of leadership showing palpably, Couturier started his night off with a helper for the lead after Tyson Foerster, his first of the season, brought it home for the lead in the first. A battle in the corner for the puck won by Couturier led to the goal to electrify this home crowd.
A period later, Couturier wanted a tally for himself, as a great sequence from the Travis(s) sprung free Coots for the wrist shot we have been waiting to see for a few years now. This goal by Coots was a massive relief and an opening of hope for the fans of Philadelphia, as the captain seemed to find a groove.
Couturier capped off his night with the eventual game-winning goal, 15:50 into the third period, after the Panthers stormed back to tie the game at two goals each.
His dominance did not stop at one point during the game. Four points on the night have officially woken up the Flyers captain, and will hopefully be here to stay throughout the year.
Zegras’ Known Skills Show in Important Victory
Another great factor that led to the Flyers’ first win of the season was the excellence of Zegras, whom the Flyers had acquired in the offseason through trade. Though Zegras has always been known on the reel for his performance with the Michigan-style goal or the lacrosse goal, tonight was a show of what Zegras can really do.
Though the Flyers were not able to put it through on the power play, the power play units, quarterbacked by Jamie Drysdale, were nothing short of hopeful. They were able to create chances through the stick handling of Zegras, which had been advertised throughout the off-season since the Flyers welcomed him to the club. This addition tonight proved to be game-changing, as he got the puck places after keeping the puck right on his stick during battles.
Though the power play was a huge highlight for Zegras, his game-saving performance in the third period is what put him under the spotlight. For the lead, Zegras, who had been battling for the puck all game, found the puck after a check into the boards, before giving a beautiful back-handed pass to Couturier, who we know had an excellent night. This play shows of skill no Flyer has ever had, and it will take the Flyers a long way if executed properly.
Vladar Stands Tall
Even with all of the excellence from Couturier and Zegras. The performance of Flyer’s goaltender Vladar will not be overlooked, as he played phenomenally in net tonight for the Flyers. Vladar, who kept the Flyers in their season opener against these Panthers, came back to the net for revenge tonight with 19,000+ behind him.
Vladar stopped 24 of 26 shots, stopping almost certain goals for the talented Panthers. Many look at this first win for Vladar in the orange and black as more hope for this team, as goaltending has always been an issue in Philadelphia.
Though Samuel Ersson will most likely stay for now, the Flyers may have something going in next as of now.
The Flyers hope to carry this performance over on Thursday night with an extra, deserved, night off, as they welcome the prior President’s Trophy winner in the Winnipeg Jets, at 7:00.
