The Phillies prevented their fourth sweep of the season with a blowout win against the San Francisco Giants. The offense, defense, and pitching all showed elite skill throughout the entire game this afternoon.

In the first two games of the series, the Phillies had a hard time hitting when runners got on base, a similar trend for the Phillies in recent history. Today, however, the Phillies kept adding runs as they were applying pressure in all kinds of scenarios at the plate. Whether a single to bring home the runner at third, or a long shot home run ball to extend the lead tremendously, the Phillies’ offense found a way to get it done today.

Not only that, but many players who have found it hard to get on track have started to heat up. Batters such as Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto, and Brandon Marsh all had multiple hits today, leading to the Phillies’ blowout victory. All of these players, who started this year on a slow note, have found rhythm in one way or another, which was all displayed in today’s game.

Every Phillie had an RBI, as well.

With two hits today, Bohm has raised his average to .282, and three hits on the day raise Realmuto’s average to .258, which is closer to the prior standard of his. Two hits from Castellanos also bring his average up to .276, closer to a .280 average goal before the break.

Harper Steals the Show

Though all these players made a difference today, none compares to Harper’s day, as his scorecard shows great signs of hope leading into the second half of the year.

In today’s game, Harper had four hits, all of them being extra base hits with a home run and three doubles, marking the first time in his entire career he has had four extra base hits in a game. All four hits went to the opposite field.

Though many feel he rushed his recovery a little too fast, he has progressed every game up to this point, where he really started to look like Harper. Every swing of Harper’s today looked to be consistent and led to solid contact, leading to his four extra-base hits.

Luzardo Gets Back on Track

One Phillie who has fallen deeper and deeper into a hole has been Jesus Luzardo. Going into today’s game, Luzardo had an ERA of 4.44, way different from his 2.15 earlier this season.

Today, Luzardo went seven shutout innings against the Giants, an opponent the Phillies don’t do great against, especially at Oracle Park. During these seven innings, Luzardo had one walk, seven strikeouts, and only three hits over 106 pitches, 78 being strikes.

A dominant start like this for Luzardo is extremely important in many ways, as a shutout performance to help out the Phillies will boost Luzardo’s confidence greatly, and slowly get Luzardo back to his start-of-the-year dominance.

One More Before the Break

After avoiding the sweep to San Francisco, the Phillies go to San Diego for a three-game series against the Padres, whom they had recently taken two of three games from at home.

With a day in between, Ranger Suarez and the Phillies hope to make a statement early in San Diego.
