The Philadelphia Flyers, after lots of talk and speculation, made a rather controversial move, it seems to many Philadelphia sports fans, in selecting right wing Porter Martone sixth overall. While many face the disappointment of passing on center James Hagens, there are many key points to look at regarding Martone.

Martone not only brings his IQ and skills to Philadelphia, but he also brings his size and physique to the Flyers as well. Martone stands at six feet three inches tall and weighs in at 207 lbs, which will only go up while being a Broad Street Bully. This is important, as the Flyers need not only big fighters, but also big puck carriers with the truculence to hold on to the puck.

Prior to being drafted, Martone played in the OHL for three years, recording his best year most recently in the 2024-2025 season.

Martone started with the Sarnia Sting in 2022, before going to the Mississauga Steelheads, where he would play the next season, where he put up 71 points in 60 games played. Martone would then play this past season with the Brampton Steelheads.

In this past season, Martone had 37 goals, 61 assists, and 74 penalty minutes for 98 points in 57 games played.

In 57 games, 37 goals is huge, which is only the start. His 61 assists show that he has the talent to find open men and pass from tape to tape. 74 penalty minutes are also massive, as the Flyers will shift towards their historic style of play.

Martone can also perform in high-leverage situations, as he scored four goals and five assists in six games during the postseason last season.

Martone’s time in the Ontario Hockey League has shown that he has elite talent. It is the Flyers’ job to make sure that talent transfers over to the National Hockey League.

On a roster that is heavy with right-wingers, the Flyers must find a way to incorporate Martone into the roster should he make the team this summer.

With being over an assist per game, the Flyers may experiment with Martone on one of the power-play units. Passing and hockey IQ would be essential to add to the struggling special teams of the Flyers. He has the skills to find a guy like Matvei Michkov or Travis Konecny open for the finish on the power play.

Not only does Martone have the talent to pass, but he also has the finishing talent with his 37 goals, which will help many possible lines on the Flyers. The Flyers just traded for a great carrier in Trevor Zegras, who, in a matter of time, can find Martone for the finish, whether it’s five-on-five or a special-teams unit. Owen Tippet, who did not finish the 2024-2025 season the way he wanted to, could receive major help from Martone, as Tippet’s style of carrying and deking will factor in with Martone’s level of talent.

With his size and potential, there are a lot of opportunities that Martone can find with Philadelphia in the near future, and many fans will come to see that.
