The 76ers have a new shooting guard.
With the No. 3 pick in the NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers have selected V. J. Edgecombe, a shooting guard out of Baylor University. This is the first time the 76ers have drafted a player out of Baylor since 2013, when they selected Pierre Jackson in the second round.
Edgecombe is the fifth player in the 76ers’ history to be selected No. 3 overall, joining Jahlil Okafor, Joel Embiid, Jerry Stackhouse, and Charles Smith.
Back in May, when the 76ers defied the odds and moved up to the No. 3 pick in the draft, it was assumed that the combination of Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, and Ace Bailey would be the first three selections, with Bailey being the 76ers’ pick at three. However, over the past few years, things have changed, with Bailey refusing to work out or meet with the 76ers in meetings and essentially telling them not to select him third overall.
Bailey got his wish, and because of it, the 76ers moved on to the next best option. A 6’5 defensive wiz shooting guard, who some people feel is the second best player in the draft behind Flagg.
A one-and-done player at Baylor, Edgecombe made quite an impact in his sole season with the Bears. In 2025, Edgecombe averaged 15 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals a game. His stellar play helped Baylor reach the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive season. They were slotted as a nine seed, where they defeated Mississippi State in round before losing to Duke in the second round.
Edgecombe now joins a loaded 76ers backcourt, led by former all-star Tyrese Maxey. On top of Maxey, there’s the 76ers’ first-round pick from last season, Jared McCain, who played in just 23 games last season due to a meniscus tear, as well as Quentin Grimes, who was acquired at this past season’s trade deadline and is a restricted free agent this offseason. The 76ers are expected to re-sign Grimes during free agency, and can match any offer any team makes for him.
