Phillies offense fails to launch again in 5-2 loss

It was the 5th straight Bryce Harper-less game for the Phillies, and there has been a common theme in each of them. The Phillies are 1-4 with just 18 runs scored in the 5-game stretch.
Today, at home trying to avoid being swept for the first time since late April against the Mets, it was a flat 2-run performance at the plate. The lack of offense, coupled with fielding mishaps from Trea Turner and Weston Wilson, was too much for the team to overcome.
1 for 8 with RISP
The Phillies stuck to their favorite frustrating loss script today. Scoring 2 runs in the first 2 innings and then going silent for the rest of the game. The Phillies worked 4 quick walks in those 2 innings against Brewers starter Jose Quintana, showing some of the best plate discipline the team has shown all season. J.T. Realmuto scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. In a rare showing, he got a hit off a left-handed pitcher, scoring Nick Castellanos in the process.
We got our first taste of 2025 June Kyle Schwarber just an inning later. In a 100% intentional move, Schwarber worked out a check swing RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
Everything after that was failing to capitalize on the slim opportunities they’d find. Johan Rojas stole second to give Schwarber another chance for an RBI in the 4th, but he lined out on the very next pitch. It wasn’t until the 7th inning that they’d have another chance to strike when Turner came through with a 1-out double, which also wouldn’t amount to anything. Even in the bottom of the 9th with a chance to start a rally, the bats couldn’t bring home Brandon Marsh from second base with 1 out.
With Harper out of the picture, the offense hasn’t quite been the same. To me, Castellanos said it best: “[Harper] is a two-time MVP. So just having his name in the lineup — regardless if he does well or not — is going to help everybody else in the lineup.”
Rob Thomson said Harper is expected to return Tuesday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Phillies’ bullpen regresses back to its old self
Ranger Suarez made his 6th start of the season and once again looked good. He went 6.0 innings into the game and was credited with 1 earned run and 1 unearned run. The unearned run came off a Turner fielding error in what was a nightmare top of the 7th inning for the Phillies. It began with Wilson misplaying what should’ve been a routine fly ball and turning it into a leadoff double for Caleb Durbin. That would call an end to Rangers day on the mound with Orion Kerkering coming on in relief. 1 out away from working out of the jam, Turner committed the error on a routine ground ball to shortstop allowing the tying run to score. 2 pitches later Jake Bauers doubled to make it 4-2 Brewers.
Matt Strahm pitched a quiet 8th inning, a good sign as Strahm has had a couple of shaky outings as of late. Jordan Romano took the mound in the 9th. As soon as you think he’s turned the corner for the Phillies, he regresses right back to where he was, Romano would give up another run, providing quality insurance for Milwaukee.
Final takeaways
The Phillies shot themselves in the foot repeatedly in this game on both sides of the ball. The most value Wilson has provided this team with as of late was his pitching performance yesterday; absolutely no excuse for his mishap in left field today.
Turner has got to be better in the field as well. No one player is at fault for the loss, but if Turner makes that play in the 7th, we probably win this game.
It’s a frustrating loss, but these things happen. Unfortunately, it’s just a part of baseball. They’ve got a chance to rebound with a trip to Toronto on the schedule next.
