Eagles Finalizing Trade To Send Bryce Huff To 49ers For A Mid-Round Pick

The Bryce Huff era in Philadelphia seems to be coming to an end.
According to ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Eagles are working on finalizing a deal that will send edge rusher Huff to the San Francisco 49ers. The Eagles’ return has not been made official yet, but it’s expected to be a mid-round, third-day pick.
The trade cannot become official until after June 1, but Huff has already reworked his contract, and both sides are working to make the trade happen.
This was the likely scenario for Huff and Philadelphia, as the 27-year-old edge rusher has not been present at the Eagles’ OTAs during this past week. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer said this week that Huff didn’t seem to be in the Eagles’ plans for 2025 and beyond.
Huff signed a three-year $51 million contract with Philadelphia last offseason and was seen as a young up-and-coming star who could bolster this Eagles defense. While the Eagles’ defense did improve in 2024, Huff wasn’t a huge factor in why.
He totaled just 2.5 sacks and 13 tackles in his sole year in midnight green. His playing time seemed to decrease more and more as the season went along, to the point where he did not even dress in Super Bowl LIX, when the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. His name then began to pop up in trade rumors throughout the months following the Super Bowl, and once he was a no-show at OTAs, it was almost confirmed that Huff had played his last snap in Philadelphia.
While trading a player being paid $17 million a year seems impossible, Howie Roseman and the Eagles front office have once again manipulated the salary cap to make this move work.
The Eagles declined Huff’s $15.58 million fully guaranteed option bonus, turning it into base salary, and turned $9.05 million of that base salary into a signing bonus. This allows San Francisco to take on the remaining $7.95 million, and saves the Eagles $7.95 million in cash and opens up $15 million of cap space for 2025.
Huff now joins a San Francisco defense led by new defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Saleh was formerly Huff’s head coach during their time together with the New York Jets.
Meanwhile, for the Eagles, this opens up a spot on their roster for guys like Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. and Patrick Johnson, who were on the outside looking in with Huff still on the team. On top of that, the Eagles get off Huff’s huge remaining salary and will get a decent draft pick for the edge rusher, adding to the surplus of draft picks they have for the next few seasons.
