Former Phillie Jean Segura Officially Announces Retirement

Jean Segura, a very memorable face in Phillies history, has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after twelve seasons, four with Philadelphia.
Through his MLB career, Segura had an average of .281 with 1,545 career hits. On top of that, he has two MLB All-Star selections, one in 2013 and the other in 2018.
Segura began his career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2012. He was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers after just one game, which ended up turning out well for Jean.
Segura spent a total of three and a half seasons with the Brewers, just before he would have one of his best seasons the next year in 2016 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he had a career-best .319 batting average with over 200 hits in that year. Segura spent his next two years with the Seattle Mariners, where he hit over .300 in both years with them.
On December 3rd, 2018, the Mariners traded Segura to a ball club who would ultimately change his career in the end, the Philadelphia Phillies.
Though playing for a team that had been in a playoff drought for some time, Segura played 329 games in his first three years with Philadelphia, collecting 361 hits during that span.
One thing that stuck out about Segura was the fact that in a ten-year career, he had seen zero baseball during the postseason. This finally came to an end the next year during the 2022 season.
Looking back, playmakers such as Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and J.T. Realmuto made a massive impact on the successful playoff run, but one Phillie who made an unforgettable impact in October was Segura.
His impact started in the very first game of the Playoffs, against the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild Card round. Segura, in the ninth inning, reached low and sent a hit the other way that gave the Phillies the lead after trailing in the game.
Segura had a similar pitch to hit in game three of the National League Championship against the San Diego Padres when he, once again, sent the ball the other way, for the Phillies to gain the lead late in the game.
Segura also had a number of defensive plays during this game that took away potential runs from the Padres.
After the 2022 World Series, Segura signed a two-year contract with the Miami Marlins on January 4th, 2023, where he did not find much success during his 85 games with Miami, as he had an average of .219, a career low.
Segura, after being tossed around a couple of times, was eventually released a total of two times in two years, hinting at the end of an era in baseball.
Though Jean did not end his career the way he probably wanted, or though he does not have anywhere near good enough numbers to enter Cooperstown, Segura made an impact with the Phillies that no fan will ever overlook.
