Flyers fall 4-3 in overtime to Senators

The Flyers were looking to ride the surge of momentum the team has gained under interim Head Coach Brad Shaw to extend the winning streak to 3 games.

While they weren’t able to get the win, they squeezed out a point for the overtime loss against one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Garnet Hathaway leads the team with 2 points

It was Hathaway leading the way for the Flyers’ offense today, notching both a goal and an assist. For Hathaway, it’s his first multi-point game since January 11th against the Anaheim Ducks, where he put up the same stat line. The assist also marked his first assist since the aforementioned Ducks game.

After a quiet 1st period, it was Nicolas Deslauriers who netted the game’s first goal at the 11:43 mark in the 2nd period. Just about 6 minutes later, Noah Cates would put the Flyers back out in front, getting his 16th goal of the year to make it 2-1.

After Ottawa tied the game early in the 3rd period, Hathaway gave the Flyers the lead back 7:33 into the 3rd period as he put the Flyers atop 3-2. The other Flyers who recorded points on the night were Bobby Brink, Emil Andrae, Nick Seeler, and Cam York, who all got assists.

Ivan Fedotov allows 4 to get by

Fedotov got the start between the pipes today after not having made an appearance since the Flyers’ March 31st game against the Nashville Predators. Fedotov played very well in that game as the Flyers managed a 2-1 victory, however, he was not able to carry that success into today’s game.

Fedotov started the game perfectly. The 1st period was a battle between the 2 goaltenders for the entire 20 minutes with neither blinking. Tim Stutzle would be the first from Ottawa to get on the board midway through the period, but despite this, the Flyers went into the 3rd with a 1 goal lead.

The Senators wouldn’t take long to tie it up, with Fabian Zetterlund making it 2-2 less than 5 minutes into the period. After the Flyers again re-took the lead, Fedotov again let one past as Thomas Chabot tied it at 3 apiece. That goal would ultimately send the game into overtime. After Travis Sanheim would get called for interference, the Senators were able to capitalize on the power play as Stutzle scored his 2nd goal of the game, this one the game winner.

Crazy to say, but the Flyers’ season is coming to an end. They’ll play their final home game against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday and then end the season in Buffalo on Thursday. While it’s obviously been a very disappointing season, especially given the team nearly making the playoffs a year ago, these final games under interim coach Brad Shaw have shown major signs of hope for the future.

The Flyers will have a lot on their plate this summer as they’ll have to find a new coach, the team will have a great draft pick to use, and they’ll have to fill out major holes in the roster, especially at goalie. But for now, the team gets ready to take on Columbus in 2 days.
