The Flyers won on the road against the best team in the NHL, the Winnipeg Jets, 2-1 in the shootout. What a win it was.

They competed, matched the play of the Jets, and found a way to get 2 points to keep themselves in an interesting position for their playoff push. Ivan Fedotov played one of the best games in his career, stopping 29/30 shots he faced.

The Flyers started strong and played a good first period; 14-7 were the shots in favor of the Flyers. Although, they weren’t able to score. Mark Scheifele scored the only goal of the period assisted by Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor. Vilardi was able to pass the puck to Scheifele even when Travis Sanheim, Cam York, and Noah Cates were there.

Like the first period, the Flyers played a good second period. The shots, this time, were 14-12 in favor of the Flyers. Most importantly, they scored their first goal of the game to tie it at 1-1. A good pass from Cates to Jamie Drysdale, who was left open in the offensive zone, had time and space and beat Connor Hellebuyck on the blocker side. It was a perfect shot from Drysdale, dinking the puck off the post and in. Nick Seeler also got the assist on the goal.

The Flyers had an opportunity, late in the second, to take the lead for the first time in the game. Travis Konecny had a breakaway after Ryan Poehling made a good defensive play with his stick. However, Hellebuyck was able to make the save.

The third period was a bit different from the first two. The Jets had the better of the play with 9-3 in their favor in terms of shots on goal. This can be explained by the two power plays they got in the last 5 minutes of regulation. The first one was on Drysdale, and the second on Rasmus Ristolainen.

The Flyers could have lost this game by giving the best team and best power play in the league some opportunities late in the game. Although, Fedotov and the penalty kill were on point. The biggest save Fedetov made during those PKs was a huge glove save (it looked more difficult than it clearly was) on Nikolaj Ehlers on the first power play.

After those PK’s, it was still 1-1 after 60 minutes of play.

In overtime, the puck was mostly in the Jets’ hands. The Flyers couldn’t create anything during the OT. The best chance from the Jets was a pretty much wide-open net but Cates made a huge block on Connor. The game was still tied after 65 minutes of play.

The Flyers would then win in the skill competition, a.k.a the shootout. Fedotov stopped all of the 3 shots he faced and the Flyers went 1/2. After Konecny missed, Matvei Michkov made a nasty move and went for-hand back-hand on Hellebuyck.

The Flyers are now 4-0-1 in their past 5 games and are keeping themselves in the race for the playoff push. They are still a long way to go, but let’s see if they can play competitive and meaningful games till the end.

The next game for the Flyers is Tuesday at 7 pm ET against Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, and the Calgary Flames at the Wells Fargo Center.
