76ers trading Caleb Martin to Mavericks for Quentin Grimes, 2nd-rounder

With their first move of the trade deadline, the 76ers are sending Caleb Martin to the Mavericks in exchange for Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round pick. The second-round draft pick is the Sixers’ own.

ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first to report the deal.

This move takes approximately $3 million off the Sixers’ payroll for this season.

The Sixers signed Martin this past offseason to a four-year deal worth up to $40 million. He played in 31 games for the Sixers, starting 24 of them, and averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Martin shot 3.5 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from three.

Martin is a big-time playoff performer, which was a big reason the Sixers brought him on. He never got to play a playoff game for Philadelphia.

Grimes, on the other hand, has shown potential throughout his four-year career, despite laboring through injuries. 

The 24-year-old is having a good 2024-25 campaign, averaging 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game with the Mavs, shooting 46.3% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.

Grimes is in the final year of his rookie contract and will be a restricted free agent this offseason.

Does this move signal that the Sixers will be sellers ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline? Kind of. We will see if any other moves are made.
