Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Jared McCain has suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee and has been ruled out indefinitely, according to the team. McCain reported soreness in his knee following the 76ers’ 121-107 loss to the Indiana Pacers Friday night, and an MRI revealed the injury, requiring surgery.
At just 20 years old, the former Duke Blue Devil has arguably been the best player for the 76ers this season. In 23 games, McCain has averaged 15.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists on 46% shooting from the field, 38.3 % from three, and 87.5% from the free-throw line.
It was an impressive stretch for McCain, who scored 20 or more points in seven consecutive games and scored 30 or more points in two of those games.
McCain has been one of if not the best rookies this season in the NBA and had the top odds to win the Rookie of the Year award. Now because of the injury, he’ll likely miss the majority of if not the entirety of the remaining regular season, causing him to not be eligible to win the award.
It’s a huge blow for the 76ers who are already off to an underwhelming start to the season. McCain was one of the few bright spots this season for Philadelphia as star players Paul George and Joel Embiid have both missed multiple games due to injuries of their own. The 76ers sit at 7-16 on the season, 2.5 games back of the 10 seed in the East.
