Well, we certainly haven’t seen one of these in a while.

The Flyers traveled to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Blue Jackets tonight and it felt like they desperately needed a win. They had lost their last three games and were overall just playing very sloppy. It should come as a great relief then, to see that the Flyers handily defeated the Blue Jackets 5-3, in a game that never felt close for the entire 60 minutes.

The Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead relatively early in the game. Noah Cates and Owen Tippett both scored for Philly in the first period. Tippett’s goal was also assisted by Jamie Drysdale, giving him his first point after returning from injury since his goal in the Flyers’ previous game was overturned.

An early power play in the second period from Travis Konecny would put the Flyers on top by three goals, and they pretty much just coasted the rest of the game.

Columbus was able to cut the lead to two after Zach Werenski was able to capitalize on a Blue Jackets power play, and it seemed for a second like momentum could swing in their favor. Konecny quickly put those concerns to bed, however, when he scored his second goal of the period, putting the Flyers up 4-1.

Less than two minutes later, at the start of the third period, Morgan Frost would put the Flyers up 5-1 off an assist from Matvei Michkov. This was Michkov’s second assist in the game and marked the fifth time in six games that he had a multi-point performance. This now gives the rookie phenom 27 points in 27 games, officially making him a point-per-game player at the moment.

Columbus would manage to get two more goals on the board before the final buzzer but they were fairly inconsequential, with their last one coming in the final 40 seconds of play, setting the final score at 5-3.

In his second game back from injury, Samuel Ersson played much better. Of course, it always helps when your defense only requires you to face 18 shots, of which Ersson saved 15. You can see him shaking off the rust that set in during his injury and it can only be assumed that he will get better from here.

The Flyers’ next game will be at home against the Red Wings at 7:00 pm EST. The game can be watched on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
