Flyers find a way to steal 2 points in Ottawa with Matvei Michkov’s overtime goal

The Flyers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in overtime in Ottawa Thursday night. The Flyers have now won 2 games in a row and are on a 4-game point streak. After starting the season 1-5-1, they are now 6-3-1 in their past 10 games.  

It wasn’t a good game for the Flyers. Ottawa was the better team in this game and created the most chances for most of the game. The Flyers didn’t develop much, especially in the first and the second periods; a good performance from Ivan Fedetov kept the Flyers in the game and they found a way.

Let’s recap the game.

First period

Despite Ottawa being the better team in this game, the Flyers started strong. Noah Cates won a puck battle on the board and gave it to Garnet Hathaway, creating a good play from it, and Travis Sanheim assisted by Hathaway and Emil Andrae gave the Flyers an early lead with a shot from distance. It was probably a goal that Linus Ullmark would like back, there was a bit of traffic in front, but it was a distance shot on the ice from Sanheim.

A few minutes later, Brady Tkachuk tied the game with 13:58 left in the period, the assists came from Josh Norris and Travis Hamonic. With a five-hole goal from Brady, the Flyers couldn’t cover the slot, Travis Konecny would’ve certainly liked to deflect the pass from Norris to Tkachuk on that one.

The first period ended with a 1-1 tie, but Ottawa got the better of play, leading 14-3 with the shots on goal.

Second period

The second period wasn’t much different from the first one, the Flyers, wouldn’t generate much offense and they even got 4 penalties in this period. Despite the really good PK from the Flyers, the Senators struck on the power play. A goal from Drake Batherson with the help of Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson with 11:19 left in the second period.

Surprisingly, despite the poor offensive play from the Flyers so far, TK tied it for the Flyers with 1:12 left in the period. With a breakaway low glove goal from Konecny off a huge pass from Cates in the Flyers zone, the puck went between the legs of Zub. Assist also from Nick Seeler.

Flyers found a way to head to the third period tied at 2 with their poor offensive play. 14-4 the shots on goal in favor of Ottawa after 40 minutes of play.

Third period

The Senators took their lead back with 15:33 left in the third period, a goal from Norris with the help of Thomas Chabot and Ridly Greig. It was a 5-on-5 goal, but Norris was given time and space while the Flyers couldn’t cover him. A few minutes later, with 9:55 to go, the Senators took a 4-2 lead on the power play. The goal came from Adam Gaudette with the assists of Chabot and Greig. He was able to go through the slot with a backhand shot after maneuvering Nick Seeler.

Despite the domination continuing in the first 10 minutes of the period from Ottawa, the Flyers once again found a way to come back in this game in less than 3 minutes. Anthony Richard cut the lead in half with the help of Bobby Brink and Egor Zamula. A goal that Ullmark would like back: a distance shot that went between the legs. After Brink set up Richard, the Flyers tied the game with Richard setting up Brink. He decided to shoot on a 2-on-1 so Brink could take the rebound. The puck went in by touching Brink’s skates, but it wasn’t a kicking motion.

The Flyers outshot the Senators in the third period 9-6 and found a way to steal at least one point in Ottawa. Also, the Flyers almost lost in the dying seconds of the period, a huge pad save from Fedetov on Norris saved them.

Overtime

After a huge save from Fedetov in overtime on Shane Pinto pushing from left to right to make a huge pad save, Matvei Michkov, in the last minute of OT won it for the Flyers, becoming the youngest player in Flyers history to score an overtime goal. He shot from the angle, without any real angle, and found a way to put it in and steal the win. Another goal that Ullmark would like to have back.

Besides the Flyers win, the offense wasn’t great, 37-19 in terms of shots on goal for Ottawa. But, the Flyers found a way. We will see if the Flyers will bounce back and generate chances against Buffalo on Saturday for the first of their 5-game homestand.
